Hi,
Note: surname spelt wrognly should say Bonner! trying to change this 🙂

i was diagnosed last June with Type 2 my HB1Ac was 79, i was put onto Metformin 500mg twice a day these made me very very ill, Doc then put me on slow release and i managed to handle these better........this was all a shock to me initially, I went low carb diet route and in Nov 2017 my HB1Ac was 49 i was pretty dammed pleased with this, since then I have gotten my butt back into the gym and now I do 30min high intensity spin classes 5 times a week with additional visits for resistance training and feeling really good.....................except for my BG levels i cannot get back under control obviously with the increase in exercise and i have these increadible urges to up my carbs.

twice my Doc said she had referred me to the Diabetic Dietician but i have never had an appointment to attend and i get no realy advice from GP and have only seen the Diabetic nurse 1 and that was when i was diagnosed last June.

I just need to try various ways to snack before and after a spin session along with do more before and after exercise readings to regain a balance.

Been sent my appt for HB1Ac 28 April with a follow up appt with the DIabetic nurse and concerned my readings may not be so good :(

any iadvice out there from anyone who does high intensity workouts and how they manage their readings without ging overboard with carbs, would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Hi Wendy, welcome to the forum 🙂 I have changed your name to 'Bonner' for you 🙂

It sounds like you have done really well since your diagnosis 🙂 It's very poor that you haven't had an appointment with the dietician despite two referrals. However, they can be a bit hit and miss, so it may not be such a bad thing. When you say you cannot get back under control, what sort of levels are you concerned about? High intensity exercise will often raise levels initially, but then levels would normally fall back later, sometimes several hours after the exercise is complete - is this your experience? What are you doing currently to try and manage your levels?

Welcome to the forum, from memory some dietitians want you to load up with carbs with is not good for us, though it's worth chasing up the referral as there are some good ones out there and can give you and insight to what you are currently eating and it's carb count.

A course worth asking about is the EXPERT course or a variant of this which is for type 2's and in my area it is self referral the doctor or the diabetic nurse should give you your local contact number.

Thanks Northener for changing my Surname 🙂

because of the training i have been eating porridge for breakfast with blueberries at 7.30am my reading have been low before spinning 5.4 or 6ish, then i eat lunch after spinning at about 12.30 and have mixed salad with some protein either fish, tune, chicken, recently i have been having dizzy spells and an urge to eat more carb based for dinner. I have not measured my readings after training when i test before dinner they have been low as in the morning 5.6 or lower, by bedtime they are quite high again I know i need to start keeping a better track but it is daunting to think that you are doing all of this work but your numbers go skewy.

Thanks Pav for the info on 'Expert' I have considered asking my Doc to refer me privately, I like to think I am pretty intelligent person but feel i am being scolded when I go to see the Doc or feel like I am being rushed out, the Doc did admit that she forgot to do the referral the first time and can only assume she has done the same again.

Sorry tohear your reading are climibing up again....what things are you doing apart from the meds?

Hi Wendy, I think you do need to start doing some methodical testing before and after exercise so you can get a better feel for how your body is reacting to your food choices and effects of exercise. It's difficult to give hard and fast advice about this because people can have very individual reactions, so it's only by learning through experience and recording reactions that you can really become familiar with how your body copes and how you might develop a strategy for dealing with it 🙂 Certainly, if you experience dizzy spells you should test to see if blood sugar levels are playing a part at that time 🙂
