You'll be fine cutting down on carbs - I have lost over 6 stone with Slimming World. I have porridge and potatoes with my evening meal. Lots of protein, veg and fruit and my last Hba1c was 37 (5.5%).

You'll be fine

Wow that's amazing! Well done! Thank you.

If you do decide to buy one the most popular is the SD Code Free monitor.
Thanks Rob will look into it before I go for my appt then I'll be ready to buy if they don't give me a meter.

Hello and welcome back. My family always have porridge and blueberries for breakfast but they don't measure. I have eggs but I'm fighting with portion control. Mushrooms and bacon would be nice. 🙂

Thanks Ditto, I can have a couple of eggs but just limited, mushrooms and bacon always sounds good to me too!

Thanks Dollypolly, I'll speak to them. I can't see why they don't do this routinely - surely it would cost less in the long term if people were managing and monitoring their sugars?!?

Hi Nicola...just noticed your thread...I had difficulty getting my GP to provide a glucose meter & testing strips on prescription...self funded for almost nine months...then decided to ask...insist these should be provided on prescription... given the obvious benefits of testing regularly...he gave endless excuses...finally it all came down to the fact the local Clinical Commissioning group were interpreting the NICE guidelines for supplying t2's with meter/strips narrowly...inaccurately...saying 'NO'...my GP did prescribe me with a meter/strips on prescription...warned me the CCG may intervene...stop him prescribing...meanwhile I wrote to the local CCG...asked them to justify their 'blanket no' for providing meters/strips...justified my use of them...they did concede my GP can prescribe for me...and continue to...although said they do not routinely recommend that...ask your GP to provide them...if it's a no...ask him why...if you get the same excuses...write to the local CCG...I'd be happy to supply a copy of my letter to anyone who might find it helpful in similar circumstances...the fact that we silently accept our GP's hands are tied by the CCG's... reinforces their (CCG's) inexplicable policy of routinely
refusing testing equipment to T2's......those decisions can be challenged...realise it's a lot to ask of others...but...believe we should all fight such arbitrary treatment of any diabetics denied testing equipment without satisfactory justification for it...good luck...try asking your GP...nothing to lose!

Thanks that is really helpful, I am lucky with my GP and they are usually supportive of anything which helps improve health etc but likewise they may find themselves restricted by dreaded red tape. I'll see how it goes and may be coming back to you if that's ok?

It's baffling really, how they expect a you to successfully manage diabetes when you have no tools to do it! I'm muddling through the next couple of weeks but I'm only able to do this because I had a basic understanding from having this in pregnancy when you get close support (although even that could have improved).

Agree absolutely Nicola...getting thought diabetes is hard enough...having to battle the system too is a nightmare...hoping your GP will see sense...not everyone wants to test...those that do...are motivated...should be allowed to... without having to consider whether funds permit ...good luck!

Hi guys,

Just wanted to update - I saw the Diabetic Nurse at my GPs today and they have given me a BG meter and put strips and lancets on prescription for me so was really pleased about that.

I've been referred for retinopathy annual check and dietary starter course (she asked if I wanted to and said yes).

Thanks again to you guys for your advice and replies.
