DUK disappointing response

I have just has a conversation with DUK about the 7 day 1200 calorie meal planner menu. My concern is that the carb count is so high with the lowest daily being 138 and the highest being 197.
Apparently DUK do not recommend carb counting and would never suggest a low carb diet for T2.
I know i have not been a member for very long - but i joined this forum in a Desperate measure to help match my diet to 1200 cals 90 carbs a day so that i can loose weight. Because of carb counting i have drastically reduced my Hba1c but not achieved any weight loss.

I asked the rep why DUK did not cater for a wider range of diabetics by offering a wider range of diet and meal planner options - the rep could not give a reason. but suggested i ask the question here.

So here goes NOTE that is about what DUK offer as a national organisation the say that "We provide information, advice and support to help people manage their diabetes effectively and confidently." taking this as a starting point
  1. Does DUK advice meet your expectations with the diet advice available on the website.
  2. If DUK is not your primary source for diet advice who is.
  3. do you feel that DUK diet advice matches the information you have received from health care professionals
  4. Do you think that DUK should offer a wider range of advice to meet the needs of its varied membership
  5. Do you feel that with the current information available on this website (not from forum friends) that you could become informed enough to take control of your diabetes.
  6. with what is currently available on the web site(not from forum friends) have you gained control of either your weight loss or your hba1c
  7. DUK have dietitians would you welcome a range of diet meal planner menus that cover a wider range of calorie count and carb count options.

It's not a source of diet or dietary advice for me at all.
I'm still very much flying solo on this.

I agree with sue...common sense
If DUK is not your primary source for diet advice who is.
I haven't relied on the DUK web site per se for managing my HbA1c...but...this forum and its members has been in valuable in that respect.
 
Hi. I agree with Pumper Sue and Ralph, I too am flying solo and losing weight slow but sure.

I think the problem here lies with the Public Health guidelines. They have not revised their 'Eatwell Guide' to take into account any benefits there may be for people with diabetes following a low, or lower carb diet.( and for some there may be a benefit, for others not)
Until they do, I can see that Diabetes UK are sitting in a rather uncomfortable position. As a national charity, can they really be seen to be contradicting national government recommendations? I think it's a bonus that on this forum, we can speak our minds and recommend what's worked for us, even though it may be at odds with official guidelines. I think there is a strong movement away from high carb low fat, but the last interview I happened to see on TV with the dietician responsible for the Eatwell Guide, was that she had no intention of revising it, or certainly not in the short term.
Personally, when I needed to lose weight ( this was before diagnosis) I ate a boiled egg for breakfast, a bowl of thick home made veg soup for lunch, a small piece of fruit as a snack, and then a normal evening meal ( without going overboard on portion size) and that worked for me.

been there failed - the diet is just not low enough calorie i have been on 90 carbs for the last 9 months still not lost anything

this was basically the response on the help line- I guess that DUK is a follower not a leader:( what a shame

Have you considered you are not eating enough - I have lost 7 stone plus in 9 months
So I am proof it works AND my Hba1c in only 37 (5.5%).
 
I always end up coming back to Atkins, nothing else works for me. 20 carbs a day at the minute...feel great on that. 🙂
 
my weight has been stable for the past 22 years i like many on here i have under active thyroid i take novomix 30 insulin along with BP meds. 90 carbs a day was meant to do the job - I have lowered my BG but not lost weight- I have tried weight watchers and slimming world. The only difference difference is that i am a wheelchair user. but i have tried to redress the balance by swimming 25 lengths twice a week. - not sure about atkins and insulin because of the ketones so not tried that. I don't snack - i don't overeat - i don't binge i cook low fat and low salt because my OH has had three heart attacks

I am not pointing the finger here just trying to convey my frustration I AM SICK OF FAILING - I AM SICK OF BEING ACCUSED OF NOT TRYING - BUT MOST OF ALL I AM SICK OF THOSE WHO ARE MEANT TO KNOW NOT BEING ABLE TO FIND A DIET THAT WILL WORK!!!

I think the problem is there is not one size fits all when it comes to diet. What works for one doesn't work for another. I lost 7 stone following weight watchers before diagnosis. I personally stick to between 100-150g of carbs a day.
 
I'm on around 50g carb a day. I couldn't shift weight at all on low calorie, low fat diets as I just couldn't stick to them. Since going LCHF I have lost 4 stone over the past 18 months. It seems to have stabled off now. And I don't do much exercise.

Also in a recent article on diet in Balance magazine they stated more research needs to be done on low carb diets. The other thing is there is no standard defination of what a low carb diet is .
 
What gets me frustrated is Dr A devised his low carb regime in 1972...all those decades wasted! Why couldn't somebody have done research over all that time?
 
Not sure about righteous but the pond is cleaned out so think I might try and grow some water-kale to go with my black pudding suppers.
