Hi there, I have just been diagnosed with type2 after a pre op check showed 19.3 I didn't even know if this was high but apparently so and may explain how I had been feeling for a few months! Dr was of the opinion that if I changed my lifestyle and dieted I may be able to control it without drugs. I have tried hard for two weeks and got it down to between 7.3 and 10 dependant on time of day. This has meant eating nothing but water, fruit, veg, fish and meat. Love my food so a little sad that my favourite pastime has been restricted but on the plus side I am hoping to discover new recipes and foods of the more healthy variety. I have sent there's a thread for recipes so will take a look over there shortly.

Hi Mr James Welcome. Sorry o hear you have joined our select club but glad you've found us.
It's good to hear you're testing, tbph it's the only way to find out how carbohydrates affect you.
It's usually the starchy carbs that are our worst enemy. Potatos, pasta, rice and bread especially white, their are substitutes 🙂. Lidle high protein rolls or protein bread, new potatoes instead of mashed , I've not tried substitutes for rice , I now only have 2 dessert spoons of rice. We do have to be careful with fruit many find berries are tolerated better and grapes are sugar bombs as for fruit juice I use it to treat hypo's (low blood glucose)

Hi James
Warm welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the advise, have a lot of learning to do but seems like I have found a good place to do just that. Could have been caught out with the grapes and berries quite easily.

Welcome.🙂

Hello and welcome. 🙂 I'm with you on being sad about not being able to eat all our favourites. I just want to pig out, but nope, not allowed. Makes me want to go and kick the cat.

Hello & welcome to our forum Mr James. You will find as you browse the forum & the general messageboard, that you will pick up numerous tips & learn a lot by reading like diabetics day to day thoughts & questions on different threads.
@Ljc has given you plenty of good sound info for starter's. You are not alone with your diabetes as each & everyone of us will be with you on your journey, that's what we do here.
There are recipe threads and meal plan threads to help you choose & plan your meals & snacks. More importantly you will learn what you can or can't tolerate by testing your blood glucose levels (bgls) daily.

Thanks all, I think the thing I will struggle with is moderation. My attitude to food is wrong I want and always used to have huge portions. Although I feel better already after two weeks of healthy food I am just starting to realise this will a long haul to really change my lifestyle and habits long term.

Hi again Mr James. Portion size is paramount, if you can reduce the size of your meals you're on the right road. My dinner service's side plates are about 7&1/2" in diameter and which I use as a dinner plate now for a smaller size meal. Apart from new potatoes I don't eat any other tupe of potatoes.

Cauliflower can be used as an alternative @Owen, mash it, add a little butter/ and or thick double cream, place in an oven proof dish, add grated cheese on top then put under the grill til crisp & brown. I also shred cauliflower as an alternative to white rice which is better for us peeps on here. Rice is a no-no for us Type 2s & so is pasta n spagetti. You'll pick up lots of ideas here.
@Mark Parrott comes up with some great tasty meals so look out for his posts on the thread 'What did you eat yesterday?' That's all for now, very late here take care

@Mr James. As @Northerner says, it's a marathon not a sprint. For a lot of us we've only just left the starting post; for others we're only 1/4 or 1/2 way to the finishing post etc. Do some research of your own too. Glad to hear you're feeling better in yourself. I used to fill my plate with oversized meals but tbh I've become accustomed to smaller portion size meals now and like yourself I'm feeling the benefit of the same. Just remember to keep the carbohydrates per gram as low as possible for your blood glucose levels (bgls) to remain healthy, Yeah? Take care

Hi Mr James
Great to hear you are feeling better than you were a fortnight ago . I was like yourself also (liked my plate well decorated) I'm still having hunger sessions, especially in the middle of the night .
Keep up the good work
