Hi everyone, have just been diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes on Tues 14 th Feb, lovely Valentine's gift but hey ho life must go on.
Hi Sharon, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis - not what you were hoping for, I imagine! :( How did it come about? Have you been given any medication for it? Do you know what your numbers were at diagnosis?

Try not to worry. Diabetes is a serious condition but it CAN be managed well - many of us here are living proof of that, so if you have any questions at all, please ask and we will do our best to help 🙂

I'd suggest having a browse of our Useful Links thread, which has links to some great resources. In particular, I would recommend reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and getting a copy of the excellent Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - these will give you a really good grounding in what it's all about and how to deal with it.

Let us know if you have any particular concerns and we will try our best to set your mind at ease 🙂

Thanks for such a warm welcome, had a feeling that it was Diabetes by the symptoms, I am not any medication yet but have my first appointment with the Diabetes nurse on Tues morning.
My number was 50 so I was told I was over but not by a lot and that it was good to catch it at this level, was that right?
So now that I have got my head around it am ready to get on to healthy eating and loosing weight, I have no excuse to not get healthy! The nurse I spoke to earlier on the phone told me I would be on some medication that makes you a bit windy😱 But can deal with that, have a friend locally who has the same as myself so we are meeting up for a chat and I can pick her brains as I am determined to lead a normal - mind I have forgotten what normal is!!

Yes that is not too high.
I know but did not before my mate who has it told me, was thinking all kind of daft numbers! So, now just have to wait until Tuesday to see the nurse and see what type of medication I will be on.

Welcome to the forum, it is a great place for advice and to chat.
Already I am thinking of questions to ask, how do you find taking Metformin? Does it have a lot of side effects apart from being rather windy which I suppose is a small price to pay ifit works!

Welcome from a fellow T2.

Hi Sharon
Warm welcome to the forum.

Metformin can take a little while to get used to for some people at first, but usually the side-effects subside a bit after a couple of weeks. You usually start on a low dose, and if necessary, gradually increase the dose. If you really don't get on with the normal kind then there is a 'slow-release' version which some people tolerate much better, so you can ask for that if you find you are suffering a bit too much. They start you on the ordinary stuff because it's cheaper and most people are OK on it 🙂

Hi Sharon, and welcome. Yes, Metformin has an unfortunate reputation (known by many as Metfartin 😱 ) and the side effects can range from, er, wind to more severe pains. Some people have a slow release version, and I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell you more. I took Metformin for a while but then was able to give it up just over a year ago, as my control by diet & exercise was good.

It sounds like you've got a good and positive attitude, so you can start making necessary changes now and be in a good position of control. Do let us know how your appointment turns out - we are very happy to answer questions (somebody usually knows!) and offer support.

Hi sharon, & welcome to the forum.🙂 please feel free to ask any questions. No question is silly, though we may snigger at some.😛

Only joking🙂
