Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi,
I'm Hailie and I'm 29, And I was diagnosed with type two a couple of months ago. I'm in denial about having diabetes I think. I'm also struggling with every day things right now, I'm feeling quite depressed. Would love to chat to people who know how I feel x

Hi Hailie, I am in the same boat as you. I felt quite depressed after I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last summer. But coming to terms with it now and determined to put things right 🙂

Hi, thanks for replying. I feel trapped right now, I'm not very overweight, but diabetes does run in my family. I comfort eat when I'm feeling down, and I feel like I'm in this vicious circle of eating rubbish because I feel down, then feeling down because I've eaten rubbish. I'm really scared that I'm on my way to becoming type one, but feel powerless to help myself
Do you have mood swings too? I feel so irritable with my two children, and it makes me feel awful x

You shouldn't feel trapped otherwise you are going to feel so much worse than you already are.
Its never to early to change things, after reading lots of threads on this forum, there is a lot of positive information 🙂 chin up Hailie...

Yes I have experienced mood swings and they make me feel awful too , I'm hoping these mood swings will some how disappear one day soon..

Thank you for the kind words. Did you go on medication straight away? My doctor wanted to see if I could control bit through diet and exercise... even though she couldn't advise me about diet plans etc.
Is the mood swings normal? I just feel like a different person now. X

Initially no, my levels when first diagnosed was 10.8 and I was told to try and reduce it for my next blood test which was 3 months later, I told the nurse that I do NOT want to be on medication. So followed her advice on what to stop eating and what to eat etc, within 3 months I lost over 2 stone and felt super great smashing only to find out from my 2nd blood test that my levels have shot up to 15.5, that was when I put on medication :| ugh..

I have been exercising since then and watching what I am eating, having a odd treat here and there but nothing like what I used to eat before

I think the mood swings are one of the symptoms of diabetes :(

What did the nurse advise you to eat? My nurse was leaning towards the healthy plate when I told her I wanted to try low carb. She then gave me a list of common foods carb content. I have been doing it 2 months plus metforim and while I am only about 10lb lighter my waist is 2" smaller and my BG now in target range. I have my review in 3 weeks and hoping I smash my first hba1c of 117!

Are either of you testing? I was given a meter though many T2 are told it's unnecessary but buy their own Code Free meter and strips (cheapest available). I test waking and bed time as minimum - looking for 4-6 and 2 hours after eating - looking for under 8.5. This way I can evaluate how carbs affect me so I know what I can eat and in what quantity. I can tolerate small portions of rice and sweet potato but one single profiterole sent me up to 9.

It's quite interesting and exciting when you get a good 'score ' But so annoying when it's too high!

As you take control you feel less emotional.

@Twistedwhispers, just to let you know you can't go from type 2 to type 1, unless you were misdiagnosed in the first place. Type 1 is an autoimmune condition. Welcome to the forum, BTW.🙂

Hello and welcome to the forum girls. :D

I was in denial too, but you'll soon get the hang of it with being on this excellent forum. Don't eat Christmas Pudding, it sent me over 12. 😱

Www thank you so much for all your replies. I feel so much better knowing that I'm not alone! Both my parents are diabetics, but they aren't very good in managing it, and I don't feel like I can talk to them about how I'm feeling as I don't think they understand why its causing me so much upset. They have been diabetics for a long time, so maybe they have forgotten how scary it is when you first get diagnosed.
Mark, I did test every morning and evening but haven't done that for a long time. (Think its the denial thing again) I last tested about three weeks ago when I had a dizzy spell at work, I think they were around six then.
Doctor wasn't very informative, she advised me just to cut out carbs. I struggle to think of what I can eat without eating carbs haha!
What does everyone else's diet consist of? I think if I had a menu plan of what to eat and what not to eat, it would be half the battle.
Also, I didn't realise that you couldn't go from type 1 to type 2 if its not controlled properly, that makes me feel a lot better thanks.
I'm finding the mood swings and the feelings of depression hard right now, I'm awful to live with!
I also have a diabetes eye test on Tuesday, which I'm a bit scared about! Sorry I sound like a bit of a wimp x

I'll give you a rough idea what I eat on an average day. Breakfasts: Natural Greek yoghurt with berries, nuts & seeds, slice of Burgen bread toasted with peanut butter, slice of ham topped with slice of cheese (the ready sliced kind) & scrambled egg, good quality sausages, bacon & eggs. Lunch: Fritattas (thick omelettes baked in the oven in a muffin tray with either tuna or ham added plus cheese), tuna & mayo salad, Lidl High Protein roll with either ham, cheese or tuna. Dinners: Pork chops with roasted Mediterranean veg, chicken curry (home made) with cauli rice, stir fry (without the noodles) & right now I have a sausage, bacon & liver casserole bubbling away in the slow cooker. I even make low carb puddings such as cheesecake or truffles or a very simple one like berries in sugar free jelly & double cream. Check out the recipe section on here for great ideas.

I know how you feel. Didn't help the way the media portrays D.

Having adapted to a low carb life, and feeling hugely better for it; I am increasingly of the view that processed grains and carbs are the route of all evil.

I know I can't cut out carbs completely or even go very low carb. So why not try reducing gradually and see how you go.
You have to find away of eating that suits and can be maintained long term.

Hi Whisper, from a fellow T2.
I've not sorted my own diet out yet, so can't give much help.
Testing can help. Do before and 2 hours after eating. That will show you what effect your food has.
After a couple of weeks, start changing things. Test more and compare to the first couple of weeks.
You're BG will go up and down during the day, and from day to day.
Some test at different times after eating to see what the peak is. I'm higher 1 hour after than at 2.

wow I like the sound of all of that 🙂
I bought some Burgen bread today from Asda, definitely going to try that with peanut butter (any particular brand?).
