Hi All

I am a parent of a fabulous 8 year old who was diagnosed as type the week before Christmas. I can't describe the relief at being told it wasn't something more sinister, but was still shocked and I suppose have grieved for my little boys life as a non diabetic.

He has amazed us by taking to his new way of life with bravery, maturity and a lot less stress than us as parents.

I will be using this website and forum for support and any hints and tips you can give will be greatly appreciated. I am a nurse and this change in lifestyle has bamboozled me completely with the bit of knowledge I have. Our paediatric team have been fabulous and cannot praise them enough drip feeding us information so as not to overwhelm us. I am truly grateful for modern healthcare/medicines and NHS that we have as I may not have my boy here today

Best wishes from a very grateful Mum

Hi and welcome to the forum. There are some very knowledgeable on here I'm sure they will give you all the help you need.

Hiya - and welcome to both you and your son, to the Club that nobody wanted to join! However - and please tell him this - we only have the best people! LOL

All members help each other, in whatever ways we can. Some of us have been members quite a while, and we all know some hints and tips - so never feel stumped when whatever occurs - somebody will be able to explain most things.

However - and dunno whether your team have recommended it, but my own DSN owns a copy of certain books (eg Think Like a Pancreas, Using/Pumping Insulin and this one) Type 1 Diabetes in Babies, Children and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. The title of this book has changed slightly as it has been revised and updated, but it's still a similar title if not that exactly right now - just try and get the latest version.

It actually is very good at explaining stuff and it's not written in medicalese - cos it's intended first and foremost for any adult in exactly your position. And it applies just as well (apart from references to growth hormones LOL) however old the person (with Type 1) happens to be.

Hi, welcome..... Ask away, we have many parents on this forum

Hi Raynor, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis :( As you rightly say though, it's a relief to hear that it is something that can be managed well, with ever-improving knowledge, treatments and technology available - it doesn't have to stand in the way of his goals 🙂 Glad to hear that he is accepting it well 🙂

As mentioned, do please get a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas - it will give you a very good reference and guide to all aspects of living with Type 1. I'd also suggest having a read of Adrienne's essential guide for parents of newly-diagnosed children, written by one of our members whose daughter was diagnosed within hours of her birth (now a healthy teenager!). There's an excellent group of parents who support each other at http://www.childrenwithdiabetesuk.org/ who also have a Facebook group. I would also spend a little time (perhaps when the information overload has declined a little!) browsing the posts here from adult members who have grown up with diabetes, in order to better understand the kinds of ups and downs we experience 🙂 Encouraging also, I hope, to read that many of our members have lived with Type 1 for decades without problems 🙂

Let us know if you have any questions, we will be very happy to help 🙂

Welcome Raynor. This is an excellent place for information.

The book mentioned by Northerner is indeed an excellent resource, which I use regularly for reference. Well worth the slightly high price.

Do ask any questions you have we are all happy to help in any way we can.

Welcome ! Your son has the right attitude. Don't let it beat you ! 😉

Hi Raynor
Sorry you have to be here, but nice to meet you all the same 🙂 Glad to hear he's taking to it well, I think kids are often more resilient than we realise, or he's just a natural trooper which will serve him very well I'm sure 🙂
