Hi all,

Following some reading on here, I've been enjoying cauli rice (either the ready chopped from Mr S or a whole one put in the processor).

Its currently my favourite. After drying it in a hot pan, I'm making fake rice, potato or adding egg and tasty bits (garlic/spices) for a fake pastry or pizza base.

For me – its working well but I know I'll get bored soon.

I understand many have difficulties with underground veg – but has anyone has tried the beetroot rice? (local supermarket has some on offer) Thinking this may brighten the food and add a little flavour.

Guess I need to experiment but if others find this an absolute non-starter, perhaps the disappointment is best avoided.

What do the regulars recommend to some one who 'loves' grated/chopped cauliflower?

Thanks is advance guys.

Bryan

PS Currently eating cauli two or three times a week – its my 'treat' food. I can do those little sweet carrots. 2 (or three if small) seem to be OK as pre or post breakfast snack..

the cauliflower steak is the second saddest thing I've ever seen (the first being a vegan hotdog that uses a carrot instead of a sausage)
Visions of this carrot made me :D😛:D😱:D like a drain!

Hi Bryan,

I'm not a low carber myself, but I do buy courgette spaghetti and butternut squash noodles, which make a quick tasty meal when you stir fry or steam and add a sauce. If I wasn't lazy I could probably shred them myself in a food processor with a julienne blade.

I assure you it's no laughing matter.

The best bit is the comments where people try to convince themselves that this isn't an utterly ridiculous idea.

Gotta be kidding me!!!

OMG, I'd rather formed the idea that the carrot was grated and seasoned and somehow shaped into the form of a sausage, not just a whole carrot shoved in there!

That is priceless! :D

The more advanced level of desperation involves smoothing off the edges to make it look more like a sausage. Some of them do look the part, but it seems to be a heck of a lot of work to recreate what isn't even the best bbq meat.

bbq meat.
Hmmmm, starts salivating at the prospect of a nice slow-smoked pork butt or even better, brisket..... 12-18 hours really slow..... Let's see the vegans try & replicate that!!!

Why not call it a carrot-dog, for Heaven's sake? What is wrong with that - why do vegetarians or vegans need to be persuaded towards 'being no different and eating the same as all you carnivores' (or omnivores)

Whilst I wouldn't want one of them as presented - I am an omnivore and I love carrots, and I might like to eat meat free sometimes - well - I do! but not if I don't know what's in the dish!

I can highly recommend the bacon and cheese chowder, but I would say that the cauliflower steak is the second saddest thing I've ever seen (the first being a vegan hotdog that uses a carrot instead of a sausage)

Some great suggestions there!
I've done a cauli pizza base (bound with egg - lots of garlic) fry it - flip it - fry it - top it and grill. Fantastic treat but took a damn long time to do.
Will try the Bread when back at home.

Carrot hot dog - no. Perhaps we could make a small hole running the length of the carrot and sell it as a cigar substitut in a glossy metal tube?

So bought sainburys beetroot rice today
http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/webapp/...rb-alternatives/sainsburys-beetroot-rice-300g

I've eaten 150g with a 50g chicken with a little curry sauce @15h00. Pre-meal bg = 6.1, will post back two hour result. Contains a lot more carbs than the cauli but looks great, good texture (after drying in a frying pan) and has a nice sweet flavour. If this works out - I can imagine mixing the cauli&beet rice.

Visiting that web site & I noticed they have a reduced carb (carb alternative?) section on the website;

Please note this is a not recomendation for anything on that page - especially NOT the konjac flour products (bare naked) which are probably the only food that I would put further down my list than meal replacement powders from your GP. If you are considering anything konjac based - read up very carefully first.

150g beetroot rice may have been too big a portion.
bg before = 6.1.
2hours later = 7.2
So good results and as expected, slightly worse than cauli.
Should probably have a smaller portion next time.

I'd never heard of it, so I did a quick google. So basically it can swell up in your throat and choke you to death. Or block your intestines, should it get that far. Needless to say, I didn't read any further.

yes but the finely chopped or thin stringy bits sold in th UK shouldn't.
The choking and surgery seems to refer to american jelly sweets made of it (banned in eu).
It sounded interesting as a very low cal option for filling up on but since finding cauli rice...

Asda charge a lot for it - I used pay £1/pack but stopped eating it after finding an undigested bit trapped in my mouth a considerable time after last eating it.

The plant its made from is famous for creating such a realistic smell of rotting flesh that it attracts flies.
The stuff smells of fish untuil repeatedly washed in boiling water. To get a reasonable texture (for fake rice) you need to boil it then fry it until dry.

I first saw it in Japan (shiritaki noodle?) but the faddy US dietiers seem to love it. Bit surprised about Asda though - makes the rest of their 'carb-alternative' range look a bit suspect. Perhpas its a hit in Walmart?

Bryan

PS I don't 'low-carb' as such. Avoiding the worst culprits has helped me control weight for many years. The improved bg control was originally a secondary motivation.
