My NovoRapid penjectors (I have 2 stainless steel, one for use at home & the other in my bumbag for use outside) are very old and the dosage figures have become rather indistinct, so I was interested to read in the latest issue of Balance, about the NovoPen 5 in blue or silver.
If my GP is willing to prescribe two NovoPen 5's, that will resolve two issues I have - at 66 years of age with severe myopia & early-stage cataracts, combined with a less than perfect memory,
I will be able to clearly see my dial-up dose and check whether or not I had it afterwards.

Has anyone used the NovoPen 5 and what is your experience so far - any upsides or downsides? Thank you in anticipation.

In my limited experience, every generation of Novopen has always been at least as good, if not better than the previous one, but I only traversed from 2 to 4, via 3 - then got my pump 5 years ago. I found the abandoned 4s buried in an unopened drawer whilst having a clearout a few weeks ago - covered in mildew! so I stuck em in the plastics recycling bin LOL

Hi BigDaddyCat, welcome to the forum 🙂 I don't have a Novopen 5 but I do have a Novopen Echo and presume it is similar. I have found it to be excellent, and a big improvement on the novopen 3 I had before. It has a dose memory function, can deliver half units, you can 'dial back' a dose if you go too far, you can check how much insulin remains in the cartridge (by dialling forward and then back) and is extremely easy to change cartridges. Highly recommended! The only thing I would say is that I still need my reading glasses to read the dose, so tend to count the clicks (there is a little click for each half unit dialled) if I can't be bothered to put on my glasses! 🙂

You shouldn't have any problems getting new pens prescribed if your current pens are that old, how long have you had them? 😱

I've got the novopen 5 and novopen echo (same thing but increments in half unit doses). Great pens for the most part, although one of mine has just broken (the bit the insulin goes in is plastic and it cracked :(). The dial is very easy to use and not at all like the disposable pens that nearly did my wrist and thumb a permanent injury. I don't need reading glasses but I do have to take my distance specs off to read that dial sometimes because it's quite small. The display showing what you've injected is great, very useful but it's a grey screen with black numbers so not great contrast so reading glasses might be needed for that too. On the whole though I like mine, nearly cried when that one cracked yesterday, the thought of having to use a disposable pen made me feel quite sick 🙄

I have a Novo Echo too. It's good , I have also but not used yet, a Novo 5 as I'm using up the disposable flexpens, the quality of both pens are good , easy to remove and load cartridges.
I'm not sure about the novo 5 but with the echo the end you push in to inject doesn't rise up very much compared to the horrid flexpens I'm using up.
Both pens also deliver insulin at a steady rate no matter how fast you press the top down.

Welcome Bigdaddycat ! (like the name :D). Like you I like things to last as long as you have had your pens. Really good luck sorting out new ones
