Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes just before my 65th birthday. Bit of a shock but not wholly unexpected. Whose going to drink my red wine now (lol) ??? Need to lose weight and get fitter but hate gymnasiums so any tips gratefully received.

Hi Rob, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and that it has come at an inopportune time (is there ever a 'good' time though?). I would say, enjoy your birthday - one day isn't going to do you harm. Probably the thing to keep in moderation most would be anything that is high in carbohydrates - pies, cake, potatoes, pizza, pasta, rice etc.

How did your diagnosis come about? Don't worry about gyms, never been that keen on them myself - far easier if you can work out a nice, pleasant route where you can walk from home and enjoy parks or countryside. If you can make it a regular thing, then you will be surprised at how much it can help 🙂 Are there any activities you particularly enjoy?

Have a read of Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter - they will set you on the right track to understanding diabetes and what approach you need to take. I'd also recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker. Understanding is key to living well with diabetes, and you can live well with it as long as you are prepared to make the changes you need to in order to manage your blood sugar levels well 🙂 Diabetes UK also has an online training course for people new to Type 2 diabetes, see Type 2 Diabetes and Me.

Please let us know if you have any questions and we will be happy to help! 🙂

Thank you Northerner for taking the time and trouble to reply to the post in such a generous and kind way. There again, like you I'm a northener too so it's only to be expected I suppose. These days genuine replies like yours really gladden my heart. I will certainly check out the information and follow your tips for walking etc. My diabetes is 'borderline' I've been told so I'm going to work to get it into remission as quickly and as sensibly as I can.

Hi Rob and welcome to the forum. You cant go wrong with Northerners advice, it definately helped me out when I was diagnosed (and still does now). The only exercise that I do is walking, I do a fair amount of it (at least 20,000 steps a day). going to a gym doesnt interest me at all.

You're very welcome Rob 🙂

Welcome to the forum, Rob, glad you found us! I'm afraid I still enjoy the odd glass of wine, but do watch my carbs 🙂. How did you come to be diagnosed? It is a shock, but you've come to a great place for friendly help and advice.

Whose going to drink my red wine now
Hi Rob, welcome to the group (though sorry to see you here).

I too don't like gyms, I get my exercise walking the dogs (unfortunately my eldest is on the sick list at the moment so we are not going so far). I lost about 25lb (initially) just by cutting carbs (breads, pasta, rice, potatoes etc) no need to go overboard unless your body wants to.

I kinda like the mediteranian approach so Red Wine is definitely on my diet though my Dr. will not prescribe it so I have to buy my own!!!

Hi Rob - on the assumption your enquiry about the 20,000 steps was a clue into your SOH - and if so - I JUST wonder if we may possibly already know each other from completely elsewhere? Does 'insurance' mean anything to you (other than needing it for that car I mean LOL)

Hello again everyone. Stephknits, I was diagnosed after bloods were taken for something else! Trouble is for me that one glass of Vinto Tinto is never enough so I suppose I'll just have to try harder to resist in the future. Martin, I'm not a dog lover for hysterical reasons so I'll have to get an Alpaca as an alternative to walk instead. Annette, car is parked on drive at front of house and it's not a long drive so there's going to be lots of 'relays' I suppose. Jenny, you do look familiar. I'm wondering where we have met before? Grovesy, perhaps you need to start trying smooth ground to walk on.
Seriously though, thank you all for your very valued and welcomed replies. This is a strange new world for me all of a sudden so your kind reassurances and advice are very much appreciated.

Ayup Rob - How's tha doin? :D

Welcome to the forum. So - just before your birthday eh! I was just before Christmas! There may not be a good time to get the news but there are better times *sigh* 🙄

Hi Rob, and welcome, you could leave the wine at a friends house a mile away, pop round for a glass the walk there and back 2 miles and your laughing. (better still drink their wine) Al

Good morning Rob and welcome to the forum from another type 2 🙂
Sure the tips you've been given here will be a big help.

Hello Lynn, Alan and Lindarose and thank you. I'm just wondering though, after all these lovely responses, does insanity go with diabetes?

No - you get it from your kids! 🙄
