Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Just had to share this. A colleague's young son has just been diagnosed T1 and we were discussing it. The tea lady said 'Oh, thats the worst kind isnt it?' Me: 'No, there are no worse kinds its just a different kind.' Another colleague (a real know it all): 'Well there are 2kinds you know.' Me (silently : Duh) 'Yes, theres several kinds but one is not worse than another.' Her: 'Well you cant, say drink 2 bottles of wine in the evening with his kind.' Me: 'Hes 7 years old...'
Anyway, according to my office's fount of all knowledge, all you T2s out there, and you non-Ds, can rest easy in the knowledge that you can drink 2bottles of wine in the evening with no problems because you're not T1! :D

Noooooo! Please don't make me drink the vile stuff!!!! 😱

Ha! Love your response Annette! :D Why is it that people feel able to pontificate on subjects they know nothing about? 😱 :( 🙄

I've had it from family over my heart condition & implant. Getting it completly wrong and saying I'm better off than I am. Then telling me I'm wrong when I try to correct them.:( Oh, and they've said that silence on the part of doctors is actually good!!😡 Excuse me while I just pop off to the other forum. I get to swear there and call pople names!

'Twas ever thus. When I was pregnant (and indeed pushing buggies) the world and his wife thought they knew better than me about how to have and bring up my children 🙄

Ive had it at work where people say 'at least my type of diabetes isnt as bad as type 1', well actually they are all as bad as each other! And when I say actually I'm not type 1 or 2, I'm MODY type 3 they just walk away scratching their heads!

I've had the other way. 'You're type one? Well that's okay, you can eat what you want and just inject for it. At least you haven't got the bad type where you can't eat anything.'

I've also been accused of being a bad diabetic as I'm on insulin. Ha.

Oh well clearly, you would be bad, having let your auto immune system get that far into killing your Beta cells that it's stopped your endogenous insulin production. I regret doing it, don't you?

I'm thinking of advertising to see if anyone else wants to crawl on their knees from here to Lourdes - or Santiago de Compostela (might be a bit warmer there?) - to see if we can collectively get forgiveness and be cured? (I don't fancy Mecca, too hot and a bit far, really) Haven't been to Santiago, but have been in Northern Spain and round Lourdes and the scenery in both areas is quite nice ......

Santiago, definitely, less crowded, better weather and better food (IMO), and I can do crawling, it's walking that causes me problems. Not too sure about all those steps though.

Oh thank god your work colleague has informed us all of this! I was under this silly illusion that alcohol can lower your BS and even T2s need to be careful of their alcohol intake. I am SO glad this is now clearly not the case. I know what I'll be doing this weekend now!! :D

Well there are a few hills between Santander and Santiago to Alison - we hung a left at Burgos last time we went, to cut through on the way to the Algarve and in between the mist saw some eagles circling. (unless they were vultures????)

Probably vultures circling some well meaning soul who'd umm, irritated(?) a diabetic.

I'm going to take that top tip and log off diabetes sites, forever.

See all you fellow T2s at AA....... 😎 <<<<< hangover face

The comments that most annoy me are "Are you allowed to eat that?!" and "You can't eat chocolate, you're Diabetic!"

It seems that despite having Diabetes for 22 years these people know more than I do about what I can and can't eat because their mate Bob from the down the pub's granny has Diabetes...🙄

Yes. They really annoy me. And people who tell me about how I can cure it by whatever the latest fad diet is (Neolithic or what ever it's called for example) because apparently some misinformation about some celebrity makes the tabloids (like that Hallie Berry who was misdiagnosed as type one but was type two and 'cured' herself by change in diet)

My favourite thing, when people find out I'm diabetic, is how they love to tell you about a family member / friend / milkman or whoever who has diabetes, but they lost a leg / kidney / eyesight etc etc because of diabetes.
Yep, that's going to make me stop talking to you!

That reminds me of being pregnant, people home in on you with stories of what a torrid time their great aunt/neighbour/hairdresser had when giving birth!

A friend of mine (who I haven't seen for a while) emailed me with weight loss advice when I told her about my Type 1 diagnosis - my BMI was around 17 at the time! 😱

After 3 years of having hardly any of this rubbish, we are suddenly finding loads of people who think diabetes is all about sugar, I.e. It's OK for daughter to eat pizza and chips (tons of carbs!) but if so much as one single biscuit passes her lips she will probably drop dead; then when I try to explain that that's not how it works and actually she can eat what she likes as long as she matches it with the correct dose of insulin, they look at me as if I'm totally crazy and don't know how to look after my own daughter. Do they really think she'd be as energetic as she is if we were doing it all wrong?! 😡

Yeah. My brother in law started having a go when I tried to explain carb counting saying 'yeah, but you shouldn't do that, give yourself more insulin for food, you shouldn't do that.' Dear on dear.

I think it's because a lot of health things are treated wkth just a tablet or something and no other thought (my underactice thyroid is just a tablet)
