is it just me or has anyone else noticed that canteens or similar places offer 0% fat products as the healthy option.

I am getting annoyed because in 99% of cases low fat = high sugar.

I tried explaining this to the catering manager at work and they said 0% fat is better for everyone, i (playing devils advocate a little) said what if a diabetic was to eat here, they would prefer lower sugar products. the manager then said that there weren't any diabetics in the army. I had to laugh.

on a similar note, is there legislation that makes catering establishments display nutritional values on the food they serve, i am finding it more and more difficult to guess how much insulin i require when i eat there.

It's not just canteens. It's the entire nutritional establishment. Every single diet authority in the world (except the Swedish government) 'knows' fat is bad and it isn't up for discussion, despite we here all know that low-fat rarely is the same thing as healthy!

Hi Mike, I think it is a legal requirement to have nutritional info on packaged food (unless it is an "artisan" product). For most catering establishments I have a feeling that providing nutritional data is voluntary (ie. many restaurant chains publish the nutrition info for their menus, but they aren't legally required to). School dinner caterers, however, ARE required to provide this info. So not much help to you! Do you have the Carbs and Cals App?

It would be useful if they had to show the carb content for those on low carb/carb counting etc so you had more idea of what you are buying.

On something completly different just noticed you are currently posted to Gutersloh; my late father was posted there 1969/1971 & we lived in quarters on Luissen Strasse. I loved it we had some great family camping holidays to the black mountains & the Mosel; I learnt to swim in the open air pool on the camp. Is it still there; I was basically thrown in at the deep end & luckily floated!! Dad was in the RAF & I went to Trenchard & then Kings school.

Take care
Lynne

Oh, I remember Gutersloh, we were there for a while too in the 60s. We were only there a few weeks then moved on to Rheindahlen. My dad was in the RAF as well.

As an experiment a while ago I ditched almost all the low fat alternatives, spreads etc and reinstated things like butter and full fat yoghurt. I'm still losing weight and my cholesterol hasn't moved at all. 'A little of what you fancy' as they say.

You were in Rheindahlen, so was I. I attended Queens School from 1958 to 1961, we lived at RAF Wildenrath. We had such a wonderful childhood.

Yup, the married quarters were at Wildenrath and we went to school in Rheindahlen where dad was working. We were there in 1967 then went to K?ln while dad was at some place I can't spell which was being closed down and ended up in a swamp called Br?ggen - also closed now.

Admittedly, there are very, very few people with any type of diabetes in armed forces. I'd resigned my commission ahead of going overseas, then got diagnosed type 1 diabetes while overseas, which meant end of emigration hopes (at that time), as I could no longer work as a SCUBA diving marine biologist / snorkling instructor, so had to return to UK, and couldn't rejoin QARANC(V), as well as being prevented from driving minibuses, vans professionally, which is vital for ecotourism jobs (admittedly, I could get right to drive vans now, but no longer worth it).

I get the impression that PAYD had casued lots of problems for lots of armed forces staff - it hadn't started when I left TA in 1995, nor was present at Mount Pleasant (Falklands) nor on HMS Endurance or fisheries protection vessels, where I spent time in 2004.

We went to Wildenrath in 1953 when they were building the married quarters ours was 222AMQ. Our next visit was 1958 when we lived at 10 WOQ the primrose coloured house close to the school.
RAF Bruggen was the pits they had RAF Police on the school busses as escorts.
