I wish my D would behave itself like that.

It's a Contour Next USB - you might be able to get one from Bayer free if you call them and tell them you are on insulin 🙂

I've come to prefer it to the Freestyle Insulinx and am now using mine as my main meter. The only real differences between the two are the size (Insulinx is a bit of a brick) and the screen on the Next USB which is easier to read in poor light. Oh yes, no cables required for the Next USB. :D

I got mine free as part of an offer from Bayer and it came with 25 strips, which is more than these companies usually give you. Dr Idiot was fine with giving me strips too, for a wonder.

He has got two machines and only records the best results🙂 I didn't like all the colours mine gave, so I've stopped using it and went back to my spreadsheet, whick gives better information.

Wish I could keep within my agreed range and I've got a Diabetic Review this week with a new Practice Nurse - could be fun!!

My secret's out! 😱

Hope all goes well at the review Vic 🙂

Alan, what are your targets?
Are they just high/low or post and pre prandiial
I know I used to set deliberately set a lower than normal low target of about 3.6mmol/l which meant not so many hypos on my graphs! Looks better when you show the doc.
Interestingly in the last year 4mmol/l would be fine. Eight and a half years on and I have fewer lows.(few more highs though)

What do you think of the contour next? I can have a new meter every 4 years and so want to ask for a new one in Dec. I need to find one that is sold both here and in the UK and that one is ( sometimes I need to buy strips in the UK so it has to be available in both countries, lots aren't exactly the same)

My targets are:

3.9 - 7.0 Fasting and pre-meal
3.9-8.5 post meal

I like the meter - it took me a while to wean myself off the Accuchek I'd been using since diagnosis, but wouldn't go back to it now. The Contour Next has a nice bright colour screen with lots of info on the meter, plus the convenience of just being able to plug it into the computer. It has on-board software and you can get more comprehensive software free to load onto the computer. It's rechargeable and the charge lasts forever. The strips are a bit fiddly as they are smaller than the Accuchek, but it takes a tiny amount of blood and allows you to add a bit more if you don't fill it first time (unlike the Accuchek, which errors :() So yes, I would recommend it! 🙂

Thanks, I think that meter might be the one to go for. I use a one touch ultra smart now and that doesn't allow extra blood without an error.
I'll have to look into the computer side. I've never been able to download my One Touch to my laptop with Vista but it works on OHs computer (ancient and gradually updated from windows 98 to XP) My new laptop has Windows 8.; and I don't really understand the differences other than visual and frustration factors. If It were up to me I'd use Risc Os but that's another story.

My (self determined) preprandial targetis a bit lower than yours; max 6mmol/l . My post meal is about the same but have to admit missing lots of those 2 hour tests nowadays.

So Alison are you saying that the Contour USB calculates your doses the same way the Insulinx does?

I like the way everyone seems to be implying that it's all down to your snazzy meter and not your own hard work! :D. Great results 🙂. (Jealous of course....)

No, the Next can store insulin doses, but doesn't calculate them.

Thank you 🙂

Good For You!

Helen, if you get in touch with Lifescan you will find the OneTouch Ultra Smart is no longer made and they should replace it with a snazzy OneTouch Verio IQ. This is rechargable via USB and is nice and bright and colourful. The software is downloadable from Lifescan and works on Windows 8.

Northie (and RedKite), apologies, I didn't mean to imply that you hadn't put in tons of hard work cos I know you have and I'm sincerely very very impressed. I was just a bit shocked to see Alison's comment that there was not much difference between an Insulinx and a Next, when the Insulinx (which I used for quite a long time) has capabilities far beyond a normal meter for anyone on insulin.

So Alison are you saying that the Contour USB calculates your doses the same way the Insulinx does?

As Alan says, no it doesn't, but I'm on a fixed dose of insulin anyway so that function isn't vital for me, at least for now.

Goodness Alison, how do you manage on a fixed dose? Are you on mixed insulin? sorry don't really want to hijack Alan's thread.
