I nearly nearly got it right!!

Not quite a pizza - However...

The last time I went out for a curry, I went to bed in the Safe zone and woke up @ 20+ mmol I havnt been up there in a while and havnt been back since.

It really put me off having currys, but I thoguht this weekend Id give it another go using some of the fantastic advise Ive had of this site.

Ive been playing about with split injections for High fat High carb meals and had a little success recently- I thoguht Id apply it too my curry and here are the results...

We went out to the local so had a couple of beers with it too - This is what I recorded.

@6:45 - BG 6.5mmol pre meal

7pm - took 1.5u To cover the 2 pints I planned on having of lager :D

7.30 - Total 100 g of carbs (Total 8 u required for food) Jalfrezi curry and a nan bread plus a popudom up front - 1 u injected in anticpation of popudum in a few mins for the popudum.

7.45 - 4.5u injected in anticpation of food within 20 minutes. Total of insulin for food now in me approx 65%.

8pm - Ate the carb & fat loaded feast

9pm - Dropped low - 3.2mmol/l - 8 G of carbs consumed (Will add an extra half unit to my total for later because of this)

10pm - 6.3mmol/l & 1.5u - Now 7u of 8.5u required taken
11pm - 6.8mmol/l & 1.5u - Now 8.5u of 8.5u taken
12pm - 8.6mmol/l Still have insulin on board
12:30 - 7.0mmol/l Caught the 4 hour spike as predicted perfect by the looks
3:40am - 7.4mmol/l All good in the hood!!
8:00am - 3.4 - Could be alcohol, or could be basal needs addressing.

My initial thoughts are that the results are good. However To stop the low an hour after eating, i maybe only need 50% insulin up front and then do more of % later on...

Any thoughts?

Great trial Benny.....I used to split 40/60 on MDI, dependant on my pre meal BG, I'd go 50/50 0r 60/40 if a little high.......always tricky though!

Cheers Phil,

It always seems to be a judgment call... The other thing that confuses me, @ What level of fat do I need to consider a split? Is it when Fat ='s Carbs? Fat is above say 20g's / 30g's , a percentage of the carbs?

Ben have you looked in the recipe section, Bev did a post on peoples experiments with food?
You might find some tips in there.

Ive had a good read through them - Some of what I did came from the information there - Infact - Id never heard or thought about splitting injections / The pizza effect etc etc until I read that section (Its also how I came to join this forum!!) . Its amazing how useful that segment is! Im going to go through and do all of the trials for myself - That one being the first. The results are invauable information!

Great test Benny - looks like you came pretty close and have a possible refinement you can use next time 🙂

.....Good question, I have never looked at the fat weight in my food, just the carb level, I have just guessed if the MDI Split would work. I only ever used to split for a very high carb or high fat/high carb meal. So for sure....pizza,chinese,indian,rice dishes, pasta dishes and take away fish and chips. One real bonus with pumping is the ability to multi wave bolus! 🙂

Ha yeh, I think a total of 5 injects to cover me - Also a lot of thought and time taken just for a takeaway- Definatly my no1 on list of advantages on a pump - Hassle free takeaways! (Ish). Injecting dosnt bother me in the slightest - It is just a pain in the bum (Well stomach) having to remember. I guess the final two injects may have worked as one, and the beer / popudom injection could have been as one also!

I think thats along my thinking at the moment , takeaways , pizzas (Although this is a difficult one for me as I dont like cheese, so literally have a base with bbq sauce and veg and chicken - still high carb though) and restaurant meals. Im hoping to come up with my own quick and easy decision making formulae in time thoguht - Thats the engineer in me

Great thread Benny 🙂

And very good results too. Slightly less beforehand and the balance at 10pm looks worth considering.

I'm really sorry to break the news, but unfortunately for you, in the interests of science, it looks like you'll just *have* to endure another curry out so that you can try more like a 50:50 split than 65:35.

Sigh! :D :D :D

O hell on earth really!! I mgiht have to make it sooner, rather than later, you know, just to get it done and out the way. I really hope it works out absolutley perfectly, other wise .... Ill have to try again!

In which case you may *have* to adjust in single percentage increments - 64:36... 63:37... 62:38...

You know... just to ensure proper scientific rigour? :D

Well weve got to be sure with these things havnt we. Baby steps is the way forward! Call me Curry monster

....allegedly, curry is very addictive!😉:D

Haha, When I lived by myself in a flat in the middle of town, I used to live above a curry house, with one opposite and one 3 doors down from there.

If I opened up the radius to 1.5 miles there were 14 or so within the town. Not good for an ex curry addict. However bgs in the 20's can certainly put you off very quickly!!
