Day off work today so before hitting the shops for the dreaded Christmas shopping inspiration trip (i.e. I didn't have a list and was sent to 'get some bits') thought I have a breakfast in the cafe. Woke up with a 7.9 and had my usual 16u of Levimar, then on the menu today was Bacon, sausage, egg, black pudding (yum) mushrooms, beans, white toast, and a latte. Ordered, took a seat, get out my insulin only to discover I didn't have any needles! Couldn't be bothered to drive home so thought stuff it I'll just be a bit high for the day!

Anyway, 4 hours later after wandering aimlessly around the City centre, I got a call and needed to pop to the office, thought I'd check my blood as I'd be driving about 30 minutes but fully expected to be in double figures, imagine my surprise to be at 5.9

So what brought my numbers down? I would have had 10-12 units of NR for that breakfast under normal circumstances but today none! Either the Levimar took care of it or the wandering around, or maybe I'm not even diabetic!

No fair Rob!!

I've had 18u of novomix this morning. Only 30g of carb all day and my levels are pants!! Plus I've been rushed off my feet all day

I tend to find that shopping results in lower blood sugars than might be expected. I think you walk further than you think, and you are standing up all the time which is a lot more active than being stationary. It doesn't sound as if your breakfast had much in the way of carbs either. Even so I'd be very surprised to see those numbers without any bolus insulin!

I guess the shopping was much more activity than my usual day sat in front of my computer with the only exercise being visits to the coffee machine! Guess I'd best not stop the insulin just yet! I certainly can't afford to shop everyday!

Interesting err... experiment(?!) Rob! I'm also intrigued about how much toast you ate, and how you would normally reckon that dose. Fry ups have often surprised me as to how little insulin I need, but it sounds like you have had this breakfast before but needed a fair whack of insulin?

And I'm another who often needs to reach for the fruit pastilles during shopping. Must be something in the air!!

Not really an experiment more me being lazy! Am now going to keep spare needles in the car! Had two slices of thick toast and with the beans, sausage and latte I'd reckon about 50-60 grams of CHO and with my ratio for breakfast usually 2:10 I'd have done 12 units, being at 7.9 on waking and drop to closer to 6.0 would have been desirable.

City centre shopping is a once in a year event for me, maybe I should wander around more often its clearly good for me, but always have a hypo remedy, could have been interesting had I actually bolused for breakfast!

...definitely the shopping, always lowers my bs, especially at this time of year with the madness of xmas.

Incidentally I would have estimated 10g of carb for black pudding, 10 for beans, 20 per slice of thick toast and 7 for the latte, total 67g carb = 13.4 units for your ratios. The fat content will almost certainly delay your rise in BS and I would guess that your levels will be climbing slowly without the insulin.

I didn't know about Black Pudding so left it out of my calcs and would have corrected if high later, good to know for future!

So, not a good week for Dan and insulin! Woke this morning with BG of 7.0 usual 16u of Levimar, off to work, stop at McDonalds for Breakfast, reach for insulin, and it's not there! Left on the table! Oh well, I'll skip lunch and hope it doesn't get to bad! 70g of CHO later I'm in the office and reception call, totally forgot a vendor was taking me out for lunch today! So Steak, chips and onion rings later and I'm thinking BG is not going to be great!

Get home at 5.15, quickly test before heading out to do some more Christmas shopping, insulin pen at the ready expecting to need a correction dose and low and behold, I'm exactly where I was 10 hours ago, 7.0!

Out for a couple of hours shopping and I'm down to 5.2.

I would have had 14u for breakfast and probably 8u for lunch, but with nothing my BG was stable! Really beginning to wonder!

Noooo!

Still the after-effects of previous day's exercise Dan!

'Our' DSNs often joke about advising their customers to only exercise every 2 days!
