Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all, i've been lurking for a while and thought it was time to say hello.

My GP confirmed last month that my fasting blood test result was 17.4 which confirmed Type 2 diabetes. After 6 weeks on Metformin it has dropped to a steady (fasting) reading of between 5.5 and 6.5. So it seems i can maintain my BS at a reasonable rate.

My worry was cholesterol as the doc looked at my results and had to ring the hospital to veryfy the results as the reading were so high (the highest he had ever seen according to him). My reading was 10.4 and the triglycerides (sp?) were an amazingly high 13.6!

Cue major diet change! No processed bread, if i can see fat on something - don't touch, cholestrol reducing spreads etc etc I hope that this lot helps in getting that reading down a bit.

So i have both to contend with, i need to reduce sugar as well as cut out all fat that i can.

Any pointers to what i can actually eat thats still tasty? I do miss my bacon butties and bottles of coke 😡 now its wholemeal toast (with marmite) and coke zero 😱

You must be a petrol head with a name like that (Good !). You cant beat the sound of a rover v8 ! Welcome. 🙂

Hi v8madness, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but good to hear that now you are getting treatment your numbers are much better 🙂 Cholesterol is high, do you know if there is any history of high cholesterol in your family? Only about 20% of cholesterol is derived from diet, most is produced by your own liver. Has your GP put you on a statin to try and reduce it?

Bear in mind that diabetes is not just about sugar, but carbohydrates in general, so rice, pasta, potatoes, bread etc. can all raise your blood sugar levels. The key to managing your diabetes well is to determine how well your body can tolerate the different foods you enjoy, and to do this you do need to test before and one or two hours after eating to build up a picture of what is OK and what needs reducing or substituting in your diet.

I would suggest reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter and getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker to give you a good understanding of your diabetes and how to manage it well. I also found the book How to Keep Your Cholesterol in Check a good read - out of print now but amazon have some second hand copies available. Many people find that reducing their carb intake helps more than reducing fats in lowering their cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and we'll try our best to help out! 🙂

Correct 1st hit - have a cookie! (sugar free of course) I rebuild engines and gearboxes for a hot-rod\off roading club so i love the sound of a v8. I think that any car with less than 8 cylinders is underpowered lol.

Thanks for the links Northerner - i'll have a read. The doc put me on Tvarastatins (not sure on that spelling) so hopefully it will bring the readings down a bit.

Welcome to the forum.

My trigliceride levels were also pretty high on diagnosis plus high cholesterol. I found that severely cutting out all the high fat stuff sorted the trigs out. My cholesterol was still 'high' (well above the 4 that the consultant wanted to see), but I considered it to be within the limit that I was happy with.

Anyway, for some meals I replaced minced beef with quorn (I make a nice and spicy quorn chilli). I rarely buy butter and tend to use Sainsbury's or Tesco's light olive margarine. I also no longer munch through blocks of cheddar cheese. Pork pies are out (but have made a reappearance recently!!).

But the thing is, you can still let your hair down every now and then to save your sanity. Don't deprive yourself completely of things you like, just make sure they don't impact your overal goal.

Good luck!

Andy 🙂

My triglycerides were 13 and cholesterol 5.1
Now down to 1.3 and 2.2.
I still eat too much c**p though.
Amazing what walking will do however.
