Just interested to know really. I mix and match - generally I use 5mm needles, but I use the larger 12.7mm for my basal dose as I just feel a bit more secure.
I've also taken to using the larger needles for more advanced dosing. For instance, if I'm eating a meal that I know will spike quite quickly but tail off quickly as well, I'll tend to do an intramuscular injection rather than a sub-q one, so I'll need to use a 12.7mm.
I've also found a good (if potentially risky) way to clear out high blood sugar very quickly. Sometimes on special occasions (say, Christmas), my BG control gets a real onslaught, and sometimes if you're running high after dinner, a regular comp. bolus just won't work fast enough and you'll spend hours sitting round feeling rough. I've found that with the larger needles, a steady hand and a lot of thought and planning, an IV injection clears out that glucose very rapidly - handle with care though as it's easy to misjudge and do too much....
