Testing is the answer. In the early days it is what is the deciding factor into what you can personally eat as we all respond differently. A scone and butter would send my levels high regardless of the fat. You may not find the same.
Whilst carbs have to be regulated because they will turn to glucose, fat will slow down their absorption so it is better to have a well balanced meal than rely on one or two food groups. Diabetes responds well to regular meals too.
This booklet might help you whilst you are waiting for your library book. It gives some good advice for newly diagnosed.
