Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
For the last three/four months I have worked five or six days a week 14:00 to 22:00 or a bit longer. I found it was better for my control to shift my whole insulin regime/eating pattern by around three hours ? hence my posts in the early hours. I now have a four day weekend and am shifting back to GMT for Saturday/Sunday. The main reason for this is that I have two meals out tomorrow ? a friend?s birthday lunch and a formal dinner in the evening. Lunch is no problem as it is in a local pub and the landlord is more than happy to give me less chunky chips and more veg. I will just have to be careful with the surprise cake that will appear at the end. The evening is more difficult as it is five courses! I might just have to nip out after two or three courses and have a booster shot. If I can wake up in single figures without a hangover on Sunday I will be a happy bunny!

Hi Stephen,

I don't know much about type 1 (I'm still learning lots about type 2 lol)! Just wanted to wish you luck! I have a feeling the christmas period will be an interesting experience...or steep learning curve 😛

Let us know how you get on!

Good luck with 7 courses in 2 meals - if I've counted right? I'd be bursting by the end, but I usually cycle home from such events, which means I can have a drink and reduce my blood sugar a bit!

Errr - why nip out to do a jab? won't your shirt have gaps between the buttons? LOL

I always try to be as discrete as possible. As it is a formal function related to "twinning" you do not know who you are sitting next/opposite to until you are actually seated. The idea is to mix people and avoid groups of friends sitting together. In these sort of situations I tend to take a natural break to check my BG and maybe inject. The last thing I want or need is: "I say Hugo that man is taking drugs!", "Damnation Cyntia you are right old girl! This country is really going down under this Cameron chappie!?*"

Good luck Stevie,

Hope both occasions go well x

Yesterday went quite well and the only BG I had over 10 was before bed ? 15.7! Although I had taken some extra insulin mid-way through the evening I did take some more. I usually would have adjusted more but in view of my high alcohol intake exercised a degree of caution. Woke up at 8.3 so happy. Just glad I do not have to go to this type of event very regularly.

Glad to hear things went well Stephen - always difficult to manage multi-course events on MDI. I must admit, I gave up pretty soon after diagnosis and stopped attending the regular Chinese restaurant nights that some friends of mine organise. Not only is it virtually impossible to inject accurately when you are getting 12 courses over a period of several hours (i.e. lots of different starters, not mains! 😱), but it's also Chinese, which is tricky to predict at the best of times.

On the occasions I have attended formal events/meals (weddings) and sat with strangers I have just politely told them that I have diabetes and need to inject before eating, after I have seen my food. I haven't encountered any objections. I would actually personally feel that going off to do it in the toilets would arouse more suspicion than if I did it at the table after letting people know why I was doing it - but obviously we all have to do what we are happy with and may vary according to the company.
