Had my last hospital visit yesterday, been having checks on kidney and all clear.

Thought I would celebrate with a quick lunch there, rare for me to do that, so went into cafeteria and all the staff are munching away on their rolls, beans and chips and rice etc, so looked for what I could have and it suddenly dawned on me that actually, there was nothing immediately available that I could eat. It was nearly all carbs.

I hadn't realised before the problem with eating out, as a type 2.

as a aside to this it may be worth writing to the hospital department dealing with the catering and telling them this after all if you cant get the right suitable kind of food in a hospital canteen what hope is there

Yes, I did think that at the time, there was a queue there and was feeling a bit under the weather, so didn't feel like waiting my turn to ask if they could offer me anything.

That does sum it up Northerner:D

Well they don't serve anything partic suitable for a T2 on the inpatient menu, why would they in the cafe? LOL Chips with everything at UHCW (the cafe) or absolutely enormous jacket spuds.

Have to say, the curries always look nice there, but have never seen any cauli rice!!!!

That poems great, made me titter

I will have to get some little tupperware pots and make up my ham salads.

Could put the odd hard boiled egg in to stink the place out:D

Shame that your hospital didn't have a fridge full of salad pots - the 2 where I've worked recently both did. Worth pointing out to catering manager to try to improve their service.

Our staff catering doesn't sell anything friendly for too many dietry needs and people have complained to the point where everyone brings their own or eats out which also works out cheaper too...

Seems strange for a hospital restaurant not to have a salad on the menu:confused:

Last time I was up at our local hostilepile, I stopped in the cafe for a cuppa as I was early for my appointment. There were cakes, scones, sarnies (white bread), burgers (microwaved) and pies. No sign of a salad or brown bread anywhere. There were a couple of full fat yoghurts and some Muller Corners that were nearest thing to a healthy option in the place.

It was a shock because they used to do home made soups and salads and stuff that looked really tempting. I wonder what happened.

Sorry, I forgot, I'm glad the kidneys are OK.

Hee hee, when I was in hosp when first diagnosed the Ward sister used to take hold of the menu for the next day (you then had to order the next day's food) and declare There's absolutely nothing on this menu suitable for a diabetic - what sort of salad would you like today, Jenny? and cross everything out and write DIABETIC!!!! HAM SALAD, DOUBLE SALAD, 1 SCOOP OF POTATO across it.

I haven't been an inpatient under the NHS since then TG.

Nothing has changed in 40 years then, has it .......

No, nothing has changed it appears.

There may have been something in a fridge somewhere, or if I had asked, as I was a bit shot away having been there two hours and intimately examined (again) in front of female student Drs. 😱

But I think I am really making excuses for them. One thing is for sure though, hospital staff eat c**p:D

Glad things are OK Slipper.

In our local, newly constructed, well decorated, Hospital, the only food on offer for visitors is a Costa Cafe.

A few years, back, my mum was a rep for a company that sold bandages, mainly to practice nurses. She provided sandwiches, fruit etc for groups of PNs after the training session. On one memorable occasion, a representative of the group aked her to bring more white bread and less brown / granary sandwiches, as the nurses welcomed a chance "to let their hair down" diet wise, as they usually brought their own brown bread sandwiches from home, using the bread they fed their families.

In my experience, having worked in a hospital, I only ate in the canteen about once a week, and tended to eat slightly higher fat, higher carbohydrate hot food, in contrast to the cold salads and sandwiches I ate at other times. So, it may be that the staff at Slipper's hospital only eat c##p once a week or so. In many cases, I couldn't get off the ward to eat, so had to rely on muesli bars or apples eaten standing up in cloak room.
