Having been diagnosed approx 5 weeks ago, put on metformin and zicron, (I have now reduced zicron to 1 a day instead of 2). I had my first set of blood tests and urine test a couple of weeks ago. I have said in an earlier thread that as a trace of blood was found in the urine, my gp gave me a short course of anti biotics to take, but as I did not have any symptoms of UTI (ie pain and discomfort), I felt reluctant to take them especially as I am already on meds that could cause stomach probs etc. I still have not taken them, but am wondering why I still suffer so much from frequent urination, ( three to five times per night) which is causing me to have broken sleep every single night. Consequently I am so exhausted in the second half of the day. I check my bg levels randomly and they never seem high either before or after food. I just dont understand why or how my bladder can fill up so often (the amount is not just a little, as it is when one has an infection) sorry to be indelicate! Has anyone any knowledge that urine infection can cause so much peeing?!

I would suggest, as a first course of action, to either give the anti-biotics a go or return to your GP to explain your concerns. He/she must have believed they would be a suitable treatment and without taking them it's just a matter of guesswork.

I would imagine that kidney infections can be quite nasty if left untreated so if it were me, I would take the anti-biotics.🙂

Hi, sorry to hear you are still having problems. What were you like prior to diagnosis fr peeing in the night - was it more, less or about the same? I found that I still had broken nights for a few months after diagnosis even though my levels were reasonable (although they were still above range). Did you reduce the zicron yourself or in consultation with your doctor? I think you need to go back to your doctor and admit that you didn't take the antibios and get another test. Infections may not always manifest themselves in the same way and he/she has the proper medical training to know possible causes. Clearly, something is causing it and it may just be that your body is in 'recovery' now that you are getting treatment, or it may be something totally unrelated to diabetes.

Don't endure this. The doctor will be used to people not complying and if he/she doesn't know then they can't help you. Whilst we can make suggestions or offer possibilities, we are not medically qualified to give you advice and any speculation is based on incomplete information as we don't know your medical history.

Please go back to your doctor, or perhaps see a different doctor if you are reluctant to see the same one - don't suffer unnecessarily! I hope you are feeling much better soon 🙂

I think you are right and I am giving the anti b's a go. Thanks so much for your words.

You do make sense

Thanks so much for your wise words. As I am a very persistent type of patient, I did actually go to my GP only days after getting the anti biotics and told him of my doubts. He advised that I could just hold on to them and only take them if the obvious symptoms of UTI appeared. I have kept them as he advised but I am so sick of this frequency that I am now going to take them to see if they help. I really appreciate your concern and good advice and don't worry I am always communicative with my doc.

Good to hear 🙂 I hope that they do the trick, I know how rotten it is to be beholden to your bladder every night when all you want is a good, unbroken night's sleep!

Hi, I had the same problems before, hopefully the antibiotics do the trick. It would be worth you telling the doctor that you are taking them and what your current symptoms are just in case he/ she thinks that you might need a longer course of tablets - the worst case would be that the symptoms come back after you stop taking the tablets. Hope you are feeling better soon x

I'm glad to hear that you've decided to try your antibioics...

When it comes to UTI's symptoms showing won't just be based on severity but the location to where the infection is based.. Most infections are in the outlet tube or the bladder leads to more frequency in urinating and perhaps some discomfort wen urinating.. Sometimes it's just smelling urine; fresh urine doesn't really smell and is clear.. The worst UTI infections are the ones that access the tube between the bladder and kidneys and/or into the kidney itself..

But even a minor UTI without any real noticable symptoms can increase the blood glucose levels as the body fights the infection..

Two tips for helping to prevent UTI's..

Cranberry Juice, this is very good but can be difficult incorparting into a diabetic regime..

Another one, is a pint of warm water first thing in the morning to flush out the kidneys..

Hi there, I would advise taking the antibiotics. At the end of January this year I had a horrible episode of cystitis that made me incontinent (4 times in one day, absolutely horrible and really humiliating). My doctor gave me antibiotics and I took most of them, but they gave me the runs so I never finished the course. That was a big mistake as over the course of the next 4 months I noticed that my pee often smelt funny first thing in the morning so, eventually, I went back to my GP. They took a sample for testing and it was positive for bacteria, so I had to have another course of antibiotics to clear the infection. This means I had a urine infection for 4 months and I have no idea if this may have caused any lasting damage. So, my advice is to take the antibiotics and make sure you finish the course.

Kind regards
Zosema

take the meds hope they help you. forgive my ignorance but in your first post you mentioned zicron i have never heard of this is it diabeties related

thanks for that. It did occur to me that giving me only three days worth may not be enough and actually now that I have taken two days worth the syptoms are slightly improved and now it does occur to me that I need more because the frequency has been ruining my nights for many months. I will ask my GP about it.

Glad to hear there has been some improvement - hope you can get it all cleared up soon 🙂

thanks for your good advice

wow sounds like you had a nasty time with your UTI. I have never had incontinence problems, but I actually cant believe how my body could produce that much water! they only gave me three days worth of anti b's, I am not sure why I think because it was only a trace of blood that they found. I will see if the symptoms stay improved. If not I will have to take more. thanks again

Hi, in my opinion, frequency of passing urine is often a symptom of a UTI, probably due to the irritation. Don't be tempted to drink less to avoid going so frequently, I would suggest lots of fluids. A 3 day course of anti biotics seems rather short, in my experience people are usually prescribed 5-7 days. Get back to GP if symptoms persist. Take care 🙂

er not correct

u learn something new every day thanks alan

Hi Gail - as I said to Northerner
I just checked the box and it actually is Zicron 40mg. It is indeed a glicazide. My GP prescribed it along with the metformin as the metformin takes about 4 months to work (so he said) so he gave me the Zicron to help symptoms more quickly.

I was put on a 3 day course at the begining of the year for a UTI I was unsure it would do any good as always used 7 days at work.
Sure enough it cleared it up a treat :D

Hope things continue to improve for you Lovetosing 🙂
