A little success this morning. Following yesterday's disaster with Allban (1hr post meal and reading was a staggering 11.1); I had a slice of bergen bread this morning (no spread) with a poached egg, immediately prior to eating my reading was 6.1; 1hr later 6.9; 2hrs later 6.9. So at least I've found one meal I can have....:D A massive thank you to those who recommended alternatives and for their support. 😉

Going to mix and match with the bread but also try natural yoghurt and fruit/nuts. Also lost another 3lbs so my anxieties in the week have subscided a little. Just need to learn that if at first you don't succeed just try try and try again....

Quick question: Does anyone use natural bran with their food?

Amanda x 🙂

Amanda thats great news, I find breakfast the hardest nut to crack but since sticking to egg and bacon I have had no troubles, its a balancing act with Diabetes just have to keep experimenting to see what suits you and what does not.x Hope the good morning readings continue.x

thats the way to go !!! :D

Well done Amanda, I will try that one.

Just had some baked beans, low salt and sugar on 1 slice of Vogel bread(same as Bergan I think), for lunch. Hope thats ok.🙂

Hi Slipper, you'll have to let me know what your reading is as when I had a slice of bergen bread with a small tin of low salt/sugar baked means my sugars peaked to 10.2 (1hr after); 10.9 (2hrs after). That's how I found out baked beans are no good for me. Hopefully will be ok for you.

The poached egg on toast was lovely but don't want to eat eggs everyday so going to try some sliced tomoto/mushrooms. Take care, Amanda x 🙂

Oops, maybe back to the drawing board for me then.

Eggs are a bit of an enigma, will we gain weight, cholesterol, by eating them?

I think its hard trying to lose weight and get the BG right, however as a newbie we will get it right I'm sure eventually.

Your weight loss Amanda is very impressive, I'm not doing so well but still losing so thats what counts.

YAY! Really please you've found a breakfast that works Amanda :D

Slipper - you may find beans are fine for you. One of the most annoying things about D is how individual it is. The only thing you can do is try it and see.

Not sure about weight gain (though know at least one T2 who lost lots of weight and has eggs as a breakfast mainstay), but I'm sure I read that the cholesterol you eat does not necessarily raise your blood chol level directly. As far as I know eggs should not do your chol too much harm.

From the British Heart Foundation website:
The cholesterol which is found in some foods such as eggs, liver, kidneys and some types of seafood eg. prawns, does not usually make a great contribution to the level of cholesterol in your blood. It's much more important that you eat foods that are low in saturated fat.

Thanks for that Mike.

Amanda, I was 8.8 at 1hr and 6 at 2hrs with my baked beans, so pleased with that. It is very individual as Mike says.

Also I have tried things for breakfast which are bad for me, then fine at lunch time, eg Volgel with some ham, nearly 11 at breakfast at 1 hr, but I think about 7.5 for lunch dropping to 5 but I also did some exercise too.

It's the tomato sauce that does it, more than the beans for most people.

Someone said ages ago that DAFNE say to halve the carbs on the tin, because you don't need to count the beans, only the sauce which sounds reasonable, so I tried that.

Well DAFNE might be able to do it but Jenny can't it's a certain fact! I compromise by having very few when I do have em, bearing in mind they have never formed a major part of my diet. Other far nicer things to eat IMHO so why bother!

I have never considered beans on toast as a 'meal' How can it be a meal? It doesn't contain at least one of the major elements of a meal ie protein. Legumes might be considered a veg but really they are just more carboydrate to add to the other carbohydrate you just buttered ....

I think thats a problem for us new ones though, we are trying to find what we can eat, but I do take you point, thanks for that.🙂

That's great; I'm giving the beans up and chuffed about the egg. It really is trial and error - I'm not going to eat eggs alot, only because its not something I would do. Going to try tomoto and mushroom on Bergen bread and fruits with natural yoghurt. I'm steadily losing between 1-2lb per week; I'm eating more fresh veg; fish and reduced my intake of potatos. I think the walking 10,000 steps a day is helping. I have a Paul McKenna 'I Can Make You Think' book and CD you can have? Its a mind-set book and helps you look at foods differently. If you do want it just email me your address and I'll post it to you. We will get there together.... Amanda 🙂

I couldn't believe it 🙂...I'd managed to sort out a good meal; mind you going to try Bergen bread again with either tomotos or mushroom and fruits and natural yoghurt. Do you know if bran is ok to use on meals (the type you buy in a bag and sprinkle on meals). I'm only testing myself with breakfasts at the moment and will slowly move to lunch and then dinner.

What does IMHO mean? Seen it in a few posts and cannot work it out. Amanda.

Baked beans do contain protein.

Other types of beans do too.

legumes do have a fair amount of protein, if you're vegan then they're almost essential.
Two hundred grams of low sugar/salt baked beans and a slice of vogel would give you 14.8g of protein about a third of the RDA for women.
I agree with you about not liking canned Beans and I would also need to bolus insulin (200g of those BB have 21.6g carbs.. not negliglble . For a meal heavy in legumes I'd use a dual wave bolus and on MDI would have spit the injection.

Hey hey hey!!! Success at last!! So pleased you've made some headway Amanda! Love Katiexxx

Going to try out roast red pepper soup for lunch today. Will let you all know how I fair.

Had 2 x poached eggs on a small slice of wholemeal bread this morning 2 hrs later 6.2 . Personally, speaking you can't go wrong with eggs and bacon. Also Greek nat yogurt with a sprinkling of mixed berries, nuts and a drizzle of honey is lovely. I also add linseeds, pumpkin and sesame seeds for a bit of crunch.

Isn't it strange how we can(cannot) tolerate certain things.

Donna 🙂
