Oh my goodness. I know this is a food item but wanted to tell others that, following a post somewhere on this fab site, I tried the cauli rice tonight as a low carb alternative to rice and I am impressed! never thought I'd say it, but it was so easy and a delicious accompaniment to my low fat bolognese sauce! Yum! Thankyou!!🙂

Katie

Ps. Going to try the cauli mash next!

Hi Katie,

Once you've tried the cauli mash can you let me have the recipe please.... Amanda 🙂

Easy peasy and ready in less than 5 mins! Grate the cauliflower (1 head makes enough for 2 hungry people at least!), pop in a microwavable dish, pop a lid on (or cover with cling film) and microwave for 4-5 mins! Done! You can add garlic, spices etc but I just put salt and black pepper in mine! If really decadent, a knob of butter would be lovely! You could have this with curry, chilli, kebabs etc etc etc....I never thought it would work, but somehow it does!🙂Katiex

Wallycorker reccommended this a while ago im yet to try it so after this thread i wil be trying it thanks Katie

When you microwave it do you add water? or is cauliflour already cooked? or it microwaved raw?

No water. The cauli has enough of its own. Just plain old cauli, grated, then zap! For the mash just cook the cauli al dente then use a hand held blender to puree. I suppose you can add mustard, a little low fat cheese, anything! Yummy! And like you said you could possibly combine other veg! 🙂

Aw sorry to hear that. Perhaps there are other 'magical' ingredients to use instead of cauli to make rice? Mash is an easier one I guess! Katiex

I must be very simple.... Have I got this right... You are mashing cauli and using it in a meal where you might have rice? As a substitute, then having a sauce or something to go with it? Sorry to be slow

Hi Ann

Yes and it's lovely and it works! Grate the cauli first. That way it kind of resembles rice grains, cover, then zap in the microwave! I'll definitely be doing it again!🙂 Katiex

Thnks, it sounds great - too good to be true , that's why I asked !!!! 🙂

How long do you zap it for - and do you do a whole cauli for one serving. is it difficult to grate cauli and how long does it take?

Hi Lucy

I zapped it for 4 mins cos I like a bit of 'crunch' and my microwave is quite poweful (800w). Give it 3, open and stir it, then a bit longer if needed. I used about a quarter of a cauli for just me. You can kind of guage how much you need when you grate it - I grated a little more than I would a portion of rice cos you can eat more cauli and it's good for you! Hope you like it too!🙂x

Don't forget the cauli either 🙂

Going to defintely give this a go.

I know this is a stupid question, but does it taste like rice? I'm going to try it too, as rice is used a lot in my household, although we only use brown.

Donna x🙂

No, it tastes like cauliflower, but then I love cauli so I don't mind and you can flavour it as you would rice. I also do a cauli dip with a little grated horse radish and onion which is great with veggies. I don't do the mash very often as it always seems a bit wet so I use celeriac or sweet potato instead.
