Decided to have a early night and went to bed at 9.30, bg was 5.6 before sleep and when I woke at 2.30 it was 6.1, I fell asleep again before waking at my usual time of 6.00am. When I woke I checked my pre breakfast reading and my bg had shot up to 11.3 which took me by surprise, I would have to go back months since the last time I had a morning reading anywhere near this level as my morning levels are typically between 5-7.

On my second sleep after waking at 2.30 I had a really awful nightmare, you know the one where you feel you are actually living it and when you wake you can't get it out of your mind, I am now thinking that the stress and realism of this night terror has in some way contributed to my higher reading, any thoughts on this and do others experience above average bg readings when waking from a bad dream?

Hi Toby I have quite a lot of bad nightmares and I'm sure that the fear does contribute to my BGs going up because sometimes they are really scary. Having said that I sometimes dream that I'm having a hypo and then wake myself up to find that my BG is low🙄

Your not alone with the hypo dreams AJ. I'm thinking that daytime stress can raise bg so nighttime stress should be no different, just hope I don't have to many of these.:(

It does sound logical that the stress would have raised your levels toby, especially if it was very unusual for you to have such a vivid nightmare. Did you retest after getting the high reading to make sure it wasn't a dud?

SOmeone else said they had higher levels after a nightmare. When they asked for advice they were told there was very little they could do except keep an eye on things during the day to see what happens.

The high after the nightmare they were told is to do withthe fight or flight mechanism. Sometimes you have something so real you have to make the choice of fighting or running away and other systems in the body react accordingly.

No I didn't test after the high reading but I did wash my hands thoroughly before testing, I imagine I was 11.3 as I included a correction in my breakfast dose and my bg is back down to 5.3, I do however normally retest when unsure about a reading but didn't on this occasion.

Fight or flight was what I had in mind Caroline as the nightmare was so real, still thinking about the damn thing now:(

If you can still remember it, it must have been intense! Does it seem totally irrational now? I had quite a vivid dream the night before last, not a nightmare but unsettling. I can still remember details now and they just don't make sense or fit together in any way!

Do you think, that if you were hypo when you had the dream, that could somehow, turn a normal dream about roses and butterflies and teddy bears (no idea, never remember but assume they must be pleasant ...) into a nightmare? and then you fight to wake up and your heart-rate is through the roof and you are gasping for air ... LOL

Intense just about some it up Northerner, my dreams no matter how pleasant or disturbing are always irrational and I wake up and ask myself why I dreamt what I dreamt:confused:

Could well be the case but convinced I didn't have a hypo. As a child I suffered from frequent nightmares but don't have many now, more often than enough they are dreams which are so disjointed that I can make no sense of them whatsoever.
