Saw a post on Facebook today showing this barbie doll is now available in Smyths toy shops in the UK, cannot see them online yet, but can get via Amazon I think.

  • Meet the first Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes! Barbie partnered with Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) to design a doll that celebrates this community.
She has a little insulin pump and her CGM on her arm.

I must say I do fancy one. I love barbie as a child <3

I'm not normally a fan of gimmicky things but that sounds a brilliant idea for Type 1 children, an aid to educating their friends and even for teachers to use in class to show the kids.

It just makes devices normal. The more visible it is the better for children. So many in Disney films and other tv shows, movies etc. now.

Did you see the marvel comic with insulet recently?

I wish I'd known about the even they had in London.

Did you see there was a character in the movie Inside Out 2 with a CGM?
The movie didn't refer to it or make it a big thing. It was just there which I thought was great.

Sadly, I don't think everyone gets it. There was one review on the Barbie page who I guess has had a bad experience of diabetes:

I had a pink pump! Later I had a green one - and a blue one too! They seem to have made pumps all boring now :(

I love the T1 Barbie and think it’s a great idea 😎
My husband 3D printed a case / cover for both my libre and pods. He was so pleased, they they a faff and he did them both in red. Brown would have been better, he did try.

If I cared that much I would buy the pretty stickers. They do pump ones that you can have any design on from dinosaur's to corgis but again with the patch pump it feels wasteful

Well done to your husband! I don’t like the stickers. It sounds a bit sad but I found being able to choose a pump colour made me feel better. A tiny thing but it made it less like a medical device. It also made it more individual. I remember going to a pump training session and there were 5 of us and, without any consultation, we’d all chosen a different colour pump :D It sounds trivial but it made something that’s a necessity fun.

I love it when it’s just there but not commented on or the storyline, just making diabetes devices be normal

I used to have a purple Medtronic back in the day, then a green animas. Really sad to have only had black pumps in recent years!
Stickers are ok but I'd prefer a proper colourful pump.

Inclusivity is good! Not Barbie related, but has anyone read 'Love theoretically' by Ali Hazelwood? It's a STEM based romance, she's a theoretical physicist. She's Type 1, has a pump (or pod - it's American). Problem is, she isn't a good advertisement for control - she is always going low and falling over. Fortunately for her the hunky hero usually catches her! It's a fun read, and I think it helps to educate people about diabetes.

@Fiona#42 The Swedish detective, Wallander, has diabetes too - Type 2. Again, he’s not the best at control, but his diabetes is just there and not made a big thing out of most of the time.

Morse had type 2 and was a terrible role model, taking most of his calories in the form of alcohol...

In Endeavour wasnt he tea total at the start but Fred Thursday led him astray?

Disappointed that my pump comes in black or black. There are bright covers in turqoise, and pink available but with the silicone cover on she gets stuck in my pocket or bra strap, so I abandoned them. Back to boring black.

She has solved the issue of the tubing from pump to cannula with that style of dress.
Not sure it is something that would work for me!!!

I have read mixed news on this, I think there are 2 more in the diabetes range, UK model Lila Moss has one of her own. I hope this one will be for sale, as she is a real role model. She did a "what's in my bag" a while ago for Vouge too and in that she had loads of diabetes bits, sweets etc, and not the tiny bag she has here.
