Type 1 Barbie Doll

Ooo. I prefer the Lila Moss one.
Although I like the idea of having a coloured pump (I have had a few in the past), I still react to the "it's a girl so it must be pink" vibe that Barbie perpetuates.
So, seeing the Lila doll with a normal white CGM is more calming.

Saw a post on Facebook today showing this barbie doll is now available in Smyths toy shops in the UK, cannot see them online yet, but can get via Amazon I think.

  • Meet the first Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes! Barbie partnered with Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) to design a doll that celebrates this community.
She has a little insulin pump and her CGM on her arm.

I must say I do fancy one. I love barbie as a child <3
The inclusivity and representation from Mattel is amazing! Such a huge step for us <3

Guys, the doll is selling out so fast but I've checked Smyths Toyshop today and my local store is taking pre-orders for the doll so I've just placed mine :D might be worth checking if your store is out of stock, you might be able to place a pre-order! This is for online

Let's face it, Ken is just an accessory in Barbie-land. A diabetic Ken would be like having an accessory with an accessory :D
Be nice to see ken with his own problems

How about high blood pressure so he gets a bp monitor and cuff

Or copd and gets a mask and oxygen bottle

Or arthritis and gets a walking stick

If you want a gender specific he could have prostate cancer but then barbie would get a doctors outfit and one rubber glove

Interesting, though a shame they didn't use one of the fully articulated body styles which are (afaiu from my youngest daughter playing with them, and from my experience of sewing clothes for them) much better to play with.

Small steps and all that, good to see something out there at least 🙂

A convert your own Barbie/Ken whatever to T1 might be interesting (and save buying yet more dolls just for their accessories - we have lots in this household!), though I can't really see there being much specific demand unless the pump/adhesive CGM/etc are all packaged up with a load of other medical-type accessories. Perhaps once I get my 3D printer setup and working... 🙂

Jo ain’t seen these yet and her birthday ain’t until September! I wonder if we can keep them under wraps until then?? Feel a bit left out actually. If anyone wants to make a grumpy middle aged electrician doll I’d be well happy. :thankyou:

Looks like you better get your order in, if Jo finds out you can always give her a surprise early gift. The grumpy middle aged electrician doll will have to be Ken or they could make a Ken's dad, Barbie isn't grumpy.

Update - I picked her up on Sunday, she's still safe in the box. I am a happy Phoebe <3

I only ever had articulated mermaid barbie, so she was half mermaid and it seemed pointless to me, she could pose her arms well and her torso moved, but no legs so she was always lay or sat o_O Could brush her own beautiful multi coloured hair.

That's what the other toys with diabetes kit have, glued on 3D printed parts. It is possible DIY with most toys but this T1 Barbie is great as it makes it normalised.

I don't understand as much the soft toys with the devices as a soft toy is to cuddle and they get in the way, but maybe that's what my husband thinks about my devices :D
I like do like the GIANTmicrobes Beta Cell and Pancreas soft toys, they are tempting - https://www.giantmicrobes.com/uk/products/betacell.html

Awww i love this <3 I picked up mine on Saturday after placing a preorder through Smyths - i love her :D
Children in the queue and me as excited. When then went to Dulmen mill, and Asda and I cradled her because I didn't want her in the car on her own.

fwiw the best bang for your buck Barbie for articulation are the ones in wheelchairs, they are almost always much cheaper than the other articulated versions, but have identical (afaict) articulation.

I feel I know much too much about Barbies, but I have my own Phoebe (my youngest) as an excuse! 🙂

Glad you've got your T1 Barbie, we (my Phoebe and I) had a bumper birthday-money-shopping trip yesterday (to The Entertainer) and did keep our eyes open for that one (though not expecting to find it and we didn't, not that she was bothered though had heard of it online apparently) and came away with three sets! She's happily playing using her imagination and I don't have any immediate sewing requests 🙂

I have not seen these plushies before! They're well cute :D

The mermaid barbies i only loved them as when you dip them in water, their hair and i think their tail changes colour :')

I can't remember what company creates the soft toys with the diabetic sensors on them, are really sweet and so relatable 🙂
