Ascend Plus clinical study

Hello everyone. I have Type 2 diabetes and take one metformin tablet twice a day. I am participating in the Ascend Plus clinical study which involves taking a daily tablet of semaglutide (Ozempic) for 5 years to see if it reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes in people with diabetes. Weight loss is not the main aim of the study. I am still at the 'run-in' stage of the trial and in one month's time I will either get a full dose of Ozempic to take once a day, or a placebo. I am experiencing a lot of nausea and I wondered if anyone else on here was taking part in this study, and if so are they also having nausea and what if anything are they doing to help with this? The study notes indicate that nausea is a common side effect and that it should wear off over time but I am getting it most days. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum @Sassafras
I think there a few other members on this trial.

Hi @Sassafras and welcome!
You'll see from the thread that @helli has signposted that I was also invited to participate in the trial. Unfortunately, during the first stage of the run-in I gradually got some nausea, constipation and bloating, with my system grinding to a halt, so had to stop the trial. I phoned the study team, and spoke to a doctor who confirmed that if I was having such issues with the lowest dose during the run-in I would not be suitable for the trial, within which a much higher dose might be randomly assigned to me. I suggest that you likewise contact the study team and explain your symptoms, and then go with their advice. They were very responsive and helpful.
Of interest, I also had similar issues when started on Metformin, which I had to then stop taking. I see you are taking, and I assume tolerating, Metformin, so perhaps these side effect symptoms might lapse for you in time for you if your guts are more forgiving than mine!
Best of luck with it.
Nick
