Christmas Dinner?

I only discovered recently that you can buy sausages wrapped in bacon.
For most of my life we have wrapped good quality bacon around good quality chippolatas. It takes very little time or effort.

And please contginue to do so. When I used to cook for two or more I used to wrap good quality bacon around a full sized Cumberland or venison sausage!

I trust you all survived the great sounding Xmas dinners, even if BG levels were all over the place, well it's only one day or maybe two.
Having lost 2st over the past 4 months, it would seem that over the last 2 days I have put on 5lb's which will now take 3 weeks to get rid of, oh the joys of Christmas :(

So many of the foods I love: smoked salmon, caviar, champagne, roast potatoes, Christmas pudding with brandy, Stilton, port and coffee! You'd need to take out a mortgage, though, to pay for the quantities of that tuck that I'd eat.
Sounds like a Fortnum and Mason Hamper would be the perfect Secret Santa for you Cliff but you would need to have rich friends to have that kind of gift.
We had Asparagus Soup,Fish Goujons, then the Roast Dinner ( Turkey and Beef) with all the Veg etc.Must admit I dint have too much meat but do indulge on the Veg and my wife always does a Beef and Turkey version of the Gravy and Stuffing so a full table.
Then a choice of 3 puddings, then Cheese and Biscuits but am happy enough to skip those and just eat chocolate.
We ate quite late as well so at 7pm but as my wife had the Bucks Fizz and a shot of moonshine she was quite giggly and after driving my son home she was asleep when I got back.
Enjoy

my BG was just 7.9 after a low (ish) carb xmas lunch. Ate lots, 5 starters, the best nut roast I've ever eaten, with several side dishes. 2 different low carb cakes and 1 lind dark chocolate... Plenty of wine, prosecco and 1 aperol spritz. I was very lucky, myself and another person cooked most stuff from scratch, to cater for everyone's needs (most veggie stuff with a salmon starter and some cold meat).
This morning BG was 8.1, could be better, but I expected worse. I managed to stay away from the chocolate and panettone lol. Today another challenge with the left overs, and the chocolate...

Well you've got a year to save up 😉

Unfortunately my terminal laziness would prevent me doing that :(

I've kept to my normal routine of an early lunch. Also kept to my normal routine of messing about a bit in the kitchen.

To be a bit special today i got a roasting tin, put a slice of red cabbage in the middle, topped that with some apple and garlic and then put a couple of duck breasts on the top. Surrounded it with potatoes and carrots. Roast in oven for half an hour at around 230C. Set one duck breast and some of the vegetables aside for another day. Rest goes on plate for lunch and back in the oven to keep warm for lunch. Drain off most of fat from roasting tray and put on hob. Throw in some mushrooms and fry in residual duck fat. Add some cider, deglaze pan, reduce and then add some cream and seasoning. Take plate out of oven, pour over the sauce and eat with the remains of the cider.

It was different, tasted good and interesting, I feel nicely full and the washing up barely filled half a shelf in the dishwasher.

PS....it is years since I did sweets with a meal.
PPS...there is much to be said for only having yourself to please.
I agree I was tempted to spend it on my own rather than being in front of high carb high sugar food... Luckily It turned out I was able to have low carb food.

Went to a local Indian. Had beer, curry, bhajis, papadoms, bit of rice, naan and some saag paneer. 6.1 before, 5.1 afterwards.

Well done! Can I ask if it is normal for BG to be lower after a meal? I'm fairly new to this, it used to happen to me after eating certain foods, like a banana, not too low but like yours (I'm not on insulin)

We started with leek and celeriac soup from one of Michael Moseley's books. Then turkey and beef, pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, ordinary potatoes and veg apart from parsnips which we unfortunately overcooked. I just had a couple of potatoes. The others pleased themselves. To finish we had a small portion of Christmas Pudding.

Well, we didn't eat until 9pm in the end and it was very basic but we both really enjoyed it. The duck was delicious and moist and fell off the bone and I would definitely go for that option again. The packaging said 1hr 40m cooking time but I gave it about 3 hours on a much lower heat and then blasted it for the last 15 mins to crisp it up. My orange sauce/gravy made with the giblets was a total success even though it was thrown together with no recipe and just a vague idea of what I wanted it to taste like and kept adding things including a couple of spoons of dark Seville marmalade until I was happy with it. Just carrots and broccoli and a baked potato for Ian although it was a massive one so I cut a bit off it for myself and we shared a can of posh cloudy lemonade to wash it down! We know how to live it up!! Then there was a rather large portion of Christmas pud which Ian bought last year at a very reduced price after Christmas, which was absolutely gorgeous and probably one of the nicest I have ever had. Served it with cream.

Reading of 8.1 before eating, so I jabbed 10 units Fiasp (a number plucked out of thin air) and only 5mins prebolus time, so ate meat and veg first. 2 hours after eating my levels were 6.2 but half an hour later just after climbing into bed my low alarm went off at 4.4. I was pretty sure there were plenty of carbs in my system, so set an alarm for 15 mins and it was up to 5.8 so I fell asleep and must have slept through the high alarm (8.2) as I woke at 3.51am feeling very hot and heart pounding on 14.5 and rising. Jabbed an aggressive 7 unit correction which took into consideration yesterdays big DP and tried to get back to sleep, but felt really rubbish so got up and had a glass of water and levels dropped to 10 very quickly, so I knew my 7 units was too much and ended up needing 3JBs at 5.49am for a 4.3 with a vertical downward arrow. Woke up at 8am on a very nice 5.8 though and graph suggests I didn't hit the red, so reasonably well managed on the whole thanks to Libre.
I know one thing.... I felt much worse on 14.5 than I did at 4.3, even with rapidly dropping levels. Not the best night's sleep but just shows that 2 hours or even 4 hours later doesn't always show the full picture with diabetes.

Food sounds great.
Your nights sleep sounds horrendous
Hope you have a good day and a better nights sleep tonight

I have just anout survived my first ever xmas lunch on Insulin. IT was a bit of a BG roller coater and I ended up on an exercise bike after the Xmas pud. But it was fun and I even had my first alcohol since I was diagnosed in March. I guess it shows you have to relax sometimes . We had salad with blue cheese and smoked salmon followed by Capon, sprouts, roast potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, parsnips, beetroot and sweet potato gratin, leek and butter bean gratin followed by Xmas pud, berries the later by Sicilian orange cake. A lot of food!

Argh I’m on 12.3 now I guess I’ll have to go for a walk

Happy Xmas everyone and thanks so much for all your help over the last 9 months , I couldn’t have survived without you. Also happy Chanukah to anyone celebrating it.
Was my first Christmas on insulin as well, all went well till late pudding at 8pm, hit 15 but was asleep by then. Not tried alcohol yet mibi today, just been luvly walk with the dog
