Very upset with myself today, went out with my friends for lunch. Ordered it and was looking forward to it, went to inject had my insulin but no needles, I could have cried ( I actually did when I came home) never forgot them before and was 7 mile from home. Just watched everyone else eat, got it boxed up, but not that keen on reheated food. Has anyone else done this, or am I the only idiot

Yes I've forgotten insulin-related stuff - and no, I don't think that either you or I are idiots 🙂. It's not like a set of keys: in my case my diabetes kit lives in an insulated lunch bag, so it's easy to forget.

It may be that my diabetes is better controlled than yours: I'd have eaten the food anyway and possibly given myself a correction dose of insulin when I got home. I'm very sorry that you didn't feel able to do that.

Had thought about eating it and take insulin when got home, but as fairly new to diabetes a was frightened to do that just had couple iff jelly babies

I'm sorry about that: I guess you can experiment in the safety of your own home, to se what's okay and not okay for you should something like that happen again.

Yes will do, wouldn’t mind but I double checked I had my insulin case, but never looked inside

Ah, what a shame for you. No way are you an idiot, we’ve all done something like that. I found myself down in London (80 mins on the train) about to eat a 7 course vegan tasting menu for lunch with no insulin at all - left behind in another handbag. Carb count was pure guesswork but I made a note of everything, tested when I got home and worked out an appropriate correction dose. All OK by bedtime.

If it happens again (and don’t on any account beat yourself up if it does!) eat your meal and enjoy it, and sort out the insulin later. No harm will have been done.

When I go out, I either take a handbag or a bumbag, (I mean, the same ones) depending what I'm doing. I have a couple of needles and a small placcy bag with 4 jelly babies that live permanently in each bag, so even though I normally take fresh supplies with me, if I were to forget, I’d be covered (I don’t think I've ever been needle-less, but I once went to my exercise class and then on to lunch without any jelly babies, and the food was so long coming in the pub that I was watching my BG going down and down after the exercise).

Yep...done it recently at work and I was 12 miles from home. As I lone work...I just sent a message to my manager telling her I was going to have to go home to get my insulin...no problem...apart from the fuel of course.

My first job after college, fairly newly diagnosed and just moved onto MDI from twice daily injections I forgot my insulin and just ate lunch and let myself go high. I think I had been told that this wouldn't be a problem by the hospital team in their enthusiastic promotion of MDI at the time. Later, possibly that same week I forgot again. I worked in a psychiatric unit and was taken aside by one of the staff nurses, who was also a good friend and colleague, and told to go home and get my insulin. He said I was doing a good job dealing with the diagnosis and didn't want to see me slipping into bad habits.

Why did you have jelly babies? I’d have eaten it and injected at home, having less of the carb element if high. Eating jelly babies suggests you were hypo so needed some carbs anyway

Thank you, just wasn’t sure if I should eat it or not, and if I could inject after eating

Thank you that is a good suggestion, will put some in with my jelly babies

Wasn’t sure if it was ok to inject after eating it, wasn’t hypo but going a bit lower. Hopefully it won’t happen again, but will know in the future I can just eat and inject later. Fairly new to diabetes so still learning

Yes, I’ve done that before @Woodywoodpecker I’ve forgotten my pen altogether and also once forgot my syringes, having carefully checked my insulin vials years ago when we used syringes. I never made the same mistake twice!

Depending on what you were having, you could have eaten the protein and veg and had the carbs when you got back with insulin.

Thank you hopefully I won’t make that mistake again, steak pie and chips full off carbs

Ah, best left then - although if I was going a bit low I’d have had a few chips.

With remembering things, what I do is speak out all components of an item when I check. That is, I don’t just say “Insulin pen - check”, I say “pen, insulin, needles plus spare”. For my meter I say “Meter and strips” etc.

I’m usually good at checking and double checking, just thought they were in with my insulin. I usually put needles for day in, in the morning but obviously didn’t this morning

Eating some of the food would have stopped you going low then

And don’t forget to check how much insulin is in the pen and pack a spare insulin cartridge or pen if it’s running low.
