Hi Everyone. I favour porridge for breakfast and chia seeds, I use semi skimmed milk as really don't use much apart from in porridge.

I've been using a 2 tablespoon measuring spoon and curiosity made me weigh the oats which were 13 grams uncooked. Is this right portion. I'm having a time of second guessing myself.
Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Welcome @jacki11 🙂 It depends on you as an individual. If you can eat that and have your blood sugar stay in range, then there’s your answer. Others might not be able to eat porridge at all, and some might be able to eat a bigger portion than you.

13g of oats is a tiny portion so you’re clearly not eating large amounts. Test your blood sugar before eating and two hours after to see the effect on your blood sugar.

Hi Jacki

Check the back of your porridge oats packet it should tell you how many total carbs, also be sure no added sugars etc.
some people find their blood glucose spike with porridge oats and others not.

I eat jumbo organic oats* from tesco about same quantity as you or maybe a little less. I cook in microwave with water 1 minute, then add a little fruit and plant milk, either soya, almond, coconut etc. If using frozen berries for instant I cook those with the oats and water.

*50g has 28.1g carbs you/we are not eating anywhere near that in oats, of course the milk and fruit will be with additional carbs.

When using plant milk check it is unsweetened. also to note oat milk is higher carbs than cows milk for instance so it says on diabetes.org site.

Most foods purchased now will tell you the total carbs on the label or packet.

You may be fine using just 13 grams oats uncooked.

Hope this of some help

13g is tiny portion, in comparison my portion is 70g although I'm on insulin, agree that testing is only way of knowing if you can tolerate oats.

Yes I'm going to have to do a fair bit of testing I think. I'm not newly diagnosed but haven't home tested in a while and my yearly blood glucose test was high which shocked me. I've always been OK on porridge but thought I'd check here on the grams etc. Thank you for replying.

I think raw porridge oats are around 65% carbs by weight, so allowing a smidge for the milk I’d reckon 13g of oats would only make 10g or so of carbs.

Are you really only having one 2tbs spoonful?

Yes I'm using a 2 tablespoon measuring spoon, which I tipped the oats from and got 13g on scales. I will test first thing in morning then have porridge and test again after 2 hrs. Thank you for your reply.

So... I think now that it's more the state my diabetes is in rather than the porridge etc. I was shocked at the yearly test, getting 62. So am now thinking all sorts. It has crept up obviously and I've not been home testing. I've pulled back on everything portion wise and I'll keep testing. It should lower soon hopefully. Thank you all for replying. I'm using my new meter as of today.

Does 2tbsp porridge really fill you up?

I also have chia seeds with it so they definitely help with filling me up, and are reducing my stomach fat, I swear by them for that, for me anyway

Hi Jacki - I also use chia and sweet basil seeds. Interested to know how much chia you use?
I just have a teaspoon of each chia and basil seeds, but I do pre soak them in water first for them to become gelatinous, both have lots of very helpful nutrients for sure. 🙂 and I find a teaspoon of each is quite a lot after soaking 🙂

I have 2 tablespoons of chia seeds daily. I don't mind the thickness they cause, with porridge I have 2 of oats and 1 of chia seeds.

I've got a new carbs and cals book, new batteries in scales new testing kit. I'm starting as if from scratch again not considering what ive been able to have before and now can't. So this morning my wake up reading was 8.3. I had one coffee splash of semi skimmed milk 1 weetabix chia seeds and small amount of milk,I'm fine with it being like a pudding lol took metformin. Had a slow stroll around the block. Forgot the time so tested 2 1/2 hrs after and got 7.6. I take metformin with breakfast and main meal. I'm a bit worried about lunch. I think I could maybe get breakfast menus sorted and have a very light lunch..
