Hi everyone,

I would like to ask if anyone has or is having problems with bloating and breaking wind ? I know it's not the nicest subject to talk about, but for months, I have been dealing with feeling bloated nearly all the time. I am not sure if it's my medication(s) that are causing it or some of the foods I consume. I don't just take meds for my diabetes, I have meds for when I had my heart attack and for intracranial hypertension, high blood pressure and cholesterol.

For the actual amount of food I currently eat, I should be slimmer than I am, but am not sure if I am putting my body into starvation mode by accident compared to if I ate more correct foods during the day.

I know that I am overweight, but the bloating makes me feel and look bigger and regardless of either burping or getting rid of wind as a botty burp (nicer word than f@@ting), I never seem to get rid of the bloated feeling.

Have any of you dealt with this in the past or are currently dealing with it ?

Cheers

Brett

Have you tried any medication to alleviate the wind like Wind-ese, or probiotic yoghurts as it could be your gut bacteria are out of balance. However it is something you should get checked out by your GP.
There are some foods which are renowned for causing wind etc, artichokes, sprouts, beans in particular in some people.

Difficult for me to say @brettr as I am and always have been a champion trumper! Can't burp to save my life, it all comes out south.
However, I have to say that when I eat large(ish) portions of carbs I bloat something wicked, especially if I eat white bread. What is your carb consumption like?
Given your complex med combo, I have to agree with @Leadinglights that you should maybe get checked out by your GP.

I also agree with everything you have going on that seeing a GP is probably wise, but do you drink diet fizzy drinks? I also eat way more protein than I did before being diabetic, (not hard these days when you can buy everything with added protein!) but I am starting to learn that if I eat too much that causes me similar problems - even with things like too many nuts!

@Vonny I also can't burp :rofl:

I have tried a couple of medications to try and alleviate my wind, Wind-ese being one of them ! I found that did nothing, a few times I have used Gaviscon for when I have been a bit acidic, which did help to relieve the bloating fairly well, but I can't take loads of Gaviscon because of how it would affect the other meds I have to take.

Have never thought of using probiotic yogurts, and you are probably more right about my gut bacteria being out of whack. I will mention this when I see the Diabetic nurse on 20th. I will be annoyed if she can't give me an answer on that, if that is the case, then I will ask her to make an appointment to see a Doctor.

I love sprouts, but don't eat them often enough for the reason of iffy sprouty botty burps lol ! I love broccoli, carrots, sweetcorn and most normal veggies, Artichokes and things like Asparagus, I tried once, but hated the taste and texture. With regards to god old baked beans, I will be cutting my consumption of those down from what I used to have.

I like your honesty lol !!

Carb wise, I thought I was doing well eating Sourdough bread, until I was told to check the carbs, and found out that most Sourdough bread sold at Tesco's etc, is not even the real thing, I would normally only have 2 slices with a breakfast of either scrambled, fried or poached eggs and sometimes a 200g tin baked beans, I would not eat any more bread for the rest of the day, unless I sometimes got a little hungry in the evenings, and then try sticking to a barm with sliced meat and salad, or cucumber/tomato, the barm being the worst thing.

2 slices of sourdough bread should not really bloat me out all day (should it ?). I will also be speaking to my local Pharmacist tomorrow with regards to all the meds I am taking and bloating etc, I have a bone to pick with them related to the wrong medication sent to my dad.

I try and keep my carb intake as low as I can. One thing I was surprised to find out is that some vegetables, besides spuds, are carb laden, such as parsnips.

Without sounding rude, most of my wind comes out as knicker ripping botty burps

You are a Purple Ronnie fan then.

I used to be a swine for my fizzy drinks, which was part of the reason I put weight on in the first place, and have cut those down a lot, I try not to drink the diet fizzy drinks as I don't like the taste of the artificial sugars, and have recently been reading how Aspartame etc, are causing serious problems to peoples health.

One thing I do drink a lot of is Robinsons Mixed Fruit (No added sugar) cordial, which contains the artificial sweeteners, hence there supposedly being no real sugar in the drink, so I have to assume that could also be a real problem for my gut flora, as it's not a natural product.

I think I eat enough protein with the foods I consume ? I also love fruit, I buy the small ready packets of Melon (orange or white colour), strawberries, pineapple (tinned small in juice). Perhaps I need to keep a diary for a week on what I am eating to give myself a better idea of what is going in with regards to carbs, sugars, protein, fats etc.

I do drink a lot of water each day, besides my cups of coffee, and occasional earl grey cup of tea. I also have Green Tea, peppermint tea occasionally. I am thinking I should drink more of those, as I know they are good for me.

I am far from a dietician @brettr, but a diary sounds a good idea - it might help you see a pattern and find if there’s something specifically that disagrees with you/something you have developed an intolerance too that you could cope with previously.

Keeping a food diary would be a good idea anyway as it will give you a realistic idea of the carbs you are having as it is easy to underestimate but having to look up the carbs may then give you a few surprises, for example the pineapple being a tropical fruit in juice also high carb is probably more than you think. A colleague used to use pineapple juice as a hypo treatment

Hahahahaha...that made me laugh. 🙂 Sorry to hear about your problems with bloating and wind. Must be really uncomfortable.

Glad my words put a smile on someone's face :D. I'm not uncomfortable with the bloating, It makes me look bigger than I probably am. It's just a pain when I'm out shopping and I get the urge to popple, knowing that it's not going to be SBD (silent but deadly), it will sound like a fog horn warning ships in the night :rofl:

Peppermint capsules can ease discomfort, can't recall what type of diabetes you have or for how long, if also experiencing loose bowels ask to get checked out to make sure your pancreas is producing adequate digestive enzymes to break your food down.

I am type 2 food and medication controlled, since October 2022. I have more of a problem with constipation which I know is a side effect of at least one of my other meds, I also have diverticulosis, so with regards to loose bowels, that can happen occasionally, but I know that's related the the diverticulosis with it only being an occasional problem.
