Good afternoon everyone. I had my blood test yesterday for diabetes after 6 weeks of water infections, blurred vision, thirst and losing weight. I have just done my levels and they are 24.8 !! I feel fine but am concerned as have ate healthy for 3 days, removed sugar out of my tea and drinking lots of water. Should i be worried ? TYI

Welcome to the forum!
24.8 is very high. Did your GP not do a finger prick test?

Did you wash you hand before doing the test as if not it could seriously affect a finger prick result

Hi and thankyou, yes i did wash my hands 🙂 ..My GP , did a water sample test and sugar was present so requested my bloods yesterday. I have borrowed a friends testing kit ( curiosity ) and was shocked at the level. I feel ok ( no worse than usual ). I should hopefully get my results tomorrow afternoon. I am completely ignorant to diabetes so have no clue .

The thirst and weight loss sound like classic symptoms of Type 1 as opposed to type 2 but you never know

You mention weight loss @JoRicco That’s a symptom of Type 1 diabetes. Does your friend have a ketone meter or any Ketostix (urine testing sticks to test for ketones)? Did your doctor test for ketones when they dip-tested your urine yesterday?

I ask because if you were to be Type 1, you could be at risk of ketoacidosis, which is potentially serious. Is your GP still open? Repeat your blood glucose test and if it’s still high give them a ring asap. If not your GP, phone 111.

Ketones are one of the tests on the GP standard urine dip test so should have been covered.

Sadly no she doesn't . My GP didn't mention Ketone's ? I rang 111 Saturday evening at the Dr rang me back 12 hrs later, 5.30 am !! I feel ok ? My gp is shut now but will ring first thing( no point ringing 111 again ) . If i begin to feel unwell my friend will drive me to A&E . Thankyou soo very much for your kindness and replies x

Maybe that's why she didn't mention it ? 🙂 . I'm just panicking , I'll ring my GP first thing x

You can buy ketone urine dip sticks at the pharmacy, pretty cheap, you may find a supermarket pharmacy open now as it would be useful to have then in case your glucose level is still high you could test asap.

3 chemist's later and no one stocks them, just order them in for prescriptions. pft

What a bummer, I was led to believe most pharmacists would stock them. Sorry if I sent you on a wild goose chase.
No problem, it got me off my butt lol ..i was'nt shocked at my local but thought Boots or big Tesco might have had them :-(

Hi JoRicco, welcome to the forum.

I too would be concerned and am glad to see that you're going to contact your doctor in the morning.

Given that you've been losing weight, it's important to insist that they take some form of action and you may need to request they rule out you being a type 1 diabetic.

You may need some support either way to bring your numbers down so I'd insist they look into this as a matter of urgency. Do keep us updated with how you get on.

Thankyou Cherrelle, i'm getiing abit confused, google is great for a lot of things but also gives conflicting advise. I have lost 6lbs in 3 weeks ??? I look like some one has vacumed my fat and muscle ???? very bizarre . Doctors tomorrow and see what my results are. Sleep well everyone xx

I think sometimes if you lose weight especially if you are slim is doesn't go evenly from the body to start with.
If you were overweight and trying to lose weight by changing your diet by reducing carbs then it is often fluid that you lose initially and 2 lbs a week would be a reasonable weight loss but if you are already slim that should be a red flag

It's one of the signs of type 1 diabetes: https://www.diabetes.org.uk/diabetes-the-basics/types-of-diabetes/type-1/symptoms

The danger is DKA, which is especially common when children develop type 1 (it seems to more often happen quickly): https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/complications/diabetic_ketoacidosis

(Doesn't mean you definitely have type 1, of course. It does feel more likely: that weight loss sounds very familiar.)

I'm 5' 7 and was 10st 8, i'm now 10st 2 .. I'm looking a bit skinny, which i hate but can't exactly scoff all my Christmas chocolate :-( Happy 2023 lol

Your symptoms sound very much like type 1 and I too would be worried about diabetes ketoacidosis (DKA), given the weight loss and how high your reading was. My diabetes also started with blurred vision and weight loss (a stone in a fortnight, and I was only 8st 7 start with), and I was rushed to hospital with a sugar level of 20 and DKA.

You can if necessary buy a pot of Ketostix from online chemists or from Amazon, though if you're going to call your GP in the morning you can at least check whether they tested you for ketones! Otherwise, if you start to feel sick or get stomach pain, or your breath starts to smell of pear drops, don't wait to speak to the GP, go to A&E and tell them you think you have DKA - as others have said, that would be a medical emergency.

When you do speak to your GP bear in mind that they may not know very much about type 1 as it's very rare, so they may not realise that adults can get type 1 and may try to treat you for type 2 - that happens, do insist that you are tested for type 1 and/or referred to a hospital diabetes clinic for tests as a matter of urgency, because if you have type 1 the meds for type 2 will not help you, and you will need insulin asap. About half of new diagnoses of type 1 are in adults (I was 44 when I was diagnosed), so the idea that only children get it is completely wrong.

A lot of the things you will see on google about diabetes are also completely wrong, so it's not surprising you are finding conflicting advice - if you're looking for more info I'd stick to the Diabetes UK site, at least for now!

And do keep drinking lots of water, that will help to flush out the sugar.

Btw, if you have type 1, once you're on insulin you will be able to eat what you like, so just hang on to the Christmas chocolate for now! If it's type 2 you will have to be more careful, but small amounts of dark chocolate should be fine.
