Hi guys long time.no see I am due to go live on Medtronic pump 780g on Monday 15/8/22 I have my pump the now just to get use to wearing and pushing buttons any tips or advice would be great as I am starting to "brick it " now thank you xxxx

Hi Vickie

Great to hear that you will be going live on your 780 next Monday. Is this your first pump?
Are you going to be using it with the Guardian sensors and then Smart Guard (their closed loop system)?

It is understandable to be nervous of the switch over. I still remember that moment of connecting my first pump. Whatever pump you are using it gives you the chance to match your basal insulin (which is a dribble of the quick acting insulin throughout the day and night) to what you actually need hour by hour. This all takes a bit of work and trial and improvement but it is well worth it. Have you set aside some time for yourself to get used to it all.

I have been using my 780 for 18 months now along with self funded sensors. This enables me to use the closed loop system where the pump makes adjustment to my basal insulin every 5 minutes. I do a lot less thinking about my diabetes.

Whatever questions you have, just ask. Happy to help out.

Welcome to the forum @Vickie

If this is your first pump, then while there will be some wobbles and ARGH! What Have I Done!! moments, the vast majority of people who start on a pump take to it like a duck to water, and never look back. It’s not all plain sailing, and there will be frustrations for sure, but the moment you realise that a piece of your diabetes kit is actively working to help you out on its own - well… it’s a revelation!

Thanks for the reply yes my first pump been waiting for quite a while lol no unfortunately will not be using smart guard just yet waiting on funding for that I sure I will be annoying your head with question in the very near future xxxx

It is good to get used to using a pump in manual mode initially as we need to be able to use that as a back up on occasions. I hope that you find the transition really helps you to fine tune things a lot more than on MDI. Now worries with asking questions that is what we are here for.

I look forward to hearing how it goes tomorrow. Don’t be surprised if you have moments when you wonder whether it was a good idea. Whilst there is a bit of work to do to get it to match your needs, most people don’t want to go back.

Starting to feel a little anxious now just over 12 hrs to go before I go live xxx

Don’t worry @Vickie

This is completely normal! It would almost be weird if you weren’t feeling like that!

It’s bound to feel daunting, but you will be absolutely fine!

Have they given any advice about your basal dose? Which basal insulin do you take and when do you usually take it?
