At risk of diabetes
Hi. I'm 59. There's type 2 throughout the paternal side of my family also accompanied by heart disease, high BP, Raised cholesterol, kidney stones and gout! What wonderful genetics! My late father had the lot by the time he was in his early 50's. He moderated his diet for about 12 months then stopped and went back to a standard western diet. He somehow made it to 78 with 3 heart attacks before renal failure from uncontrolled diabetes got him.
I live with M.E)CFS and Fibromyalgia and can't really exercise. My meds made me very overweight, and prediabetic. Determined not to be like my father,( I'm a sugar addict. It's a real thing.), I live a Keto lifestyle. I lost all my weight. Went from a size 16 to an 8. If I do end up with type 2 ,I know it's genetic not lifestyle. Let's hope not. I've asked about Keto blood monitors in the food thread. Dunno where the right place is.

Hi Cinders. You can do this 🙂
Size 16 to 8? Respect!

Hi and welcome.

So sorry to hear that your Dad struggled to manage his diabetes but certainly sounds like you are up for the challenge and determined to beat it. We like that sort of attitude here :D and you have clearly made fantastic progress. A huge well done on your weight loss.

As regards Ketone testing, you are best off buying Ketostix which are urine dip sticks. The blood ketone test strips are very expensive (something like £5 for each individual strip) as oppose to £5 for a pot of 50 Ketostix and you don't need any great accuracy when you are just checking to see if you are in ketosis. To be honest, the fact that you have lost 4 dress sizes tells you that you are burning fat and if you are following a keto diet you can't do anything else because you are not supplying enough carbs for your body to survive on, so I am not sure why people on a keto diet feel the need to test when they can see the results.
For those of us who are Type 1 we need to test for ketones when our BG levels are high because we don't produce enough insulin, so we can do into Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) but that should not be a problem for you because your pancreas should be able to produce plenty of insulin, especially now that you have taken the strain right off it through your keto diet. Testing your BG levels would probably be the sensible thing to do if you don't already do that, so that you can see how effective your food choices are on your BG and keep an eye out for anything changing as regards possible upward drift over time.
You say your meds have made you overweight and prediabetic. Are we talking about steroids?

It might be easier and cheaper just to measure blood glucose levels as they are, after all, what its all about.

Don't bother testing for Ketones. When you adapt, you will be using them for fuel and so they won't show up in your urine. Test your Blood Glucose and if you are eating Low carb then you are producing ketones at least some of he time. My daily carbs range between 20gms and 40gms per day and I use Time Restricted Eating (sometimes known as Intermittent Fasting) eating either 1 or 2 meals per day (never having breakfast) , so for most of the day I'm producing (and using up) Ketones and avoiding producing Insulin.

Hi Vonny. No steroids.I took Pre gabilin for my Fibromyalgia. Its dreadful for interfering with metabolism and stopping weight loss.I tried every diet under the sun.Keto was the only one that worked.Thankfully once I discovered CBD oil,I was able to wean off the Pre gabilin. Ketostix arnt accurate after 4 weeks on Keto. But there's an optimal keto blood level of 0.5-3mmol for fat burning. Lower and you're not in Ketosis and higher and you have too many ketones roaming around the blood and you're not burning the fat.So the 'experts' say.

yes.I was wondering whether I needed to do this.My A1c was down to 35 earlier this year thankfully!
