Intolerance to bread

Relationship to Diabetes

When I was diagnosed as a diabetic, at the same time I had had big issues with bread. If I ate a sandwich then within minutes I would make serious aquaintance with the smallest room in the house. Probably it was the carbs but it could have been a reaction to the gluten. I never got to the bottom of it (pun intended).

Anyway at diagnosis, once I understood more about diabetes I gave up bread. So, for almost a year now I haven't had a sandwich or toast or any bread product.

And me and 5he smallest room in the house have almost become strangers!

Yesterday I decided to do a test. I decided to eat a complete sandwich pack from M&S. A prawn on brown bread. And to do some blood glucose tests around the two pieces.

Start BG 5.3
2 Hrs after 1st sandwich BG 5.4
2 Hrs after second sandwich BG 5.5

No issues with tummy and no reaquaintance with that room.

And the sandwiches were delicious.

So maybe I am no longer intolerant of bread or whatever is in it.

Good news

Great news on both counts.

The sandwich readings suggest that they were right that you were never diabetic and had a temporary pancreas problem.

I love that: 'they were right'

No, they never said that. It was my daughter and I that are postulating that. No idea how to prove it though.

As someone here said, once diagnosed as a diabetic then that stays with you.

So, anyone any idea how to prove that someone is not diabetic?

Simple. Ask for an Ogtt ( Oral Glucose Tolerance Test). But it looks like you have already had one with the M&S sandwich !
Or you can do a DIY ogtt - fasting, drink 100ml of Lucozade and test at 2 hours. 11.1 plus and its Type 2 Diabetes.
You sig says, 'Then diagnosed as non diabetic'. Please remove that if its untrue. Its obviously misleading.

Whoops. I probably got that bit wrong. Sorry. No the last diagnosis was T2. No idea why I wrote that.

I see it now. I wrote one thing and thought another. Doh!

I have changed it. Hope it is more correct. My appologies

Thanks for the suggestion of the home test OGTT. I will give it a go sometime this week.

Hi Gwyn, like you I have problems when eating bread, my blood glucose readings really shoot up, so really have to avoid it. I should imagine it felt wonderful sinking your teeth into that M&S sandwich. Bread and potatoes are two of the foods I really miss. But body parts go awry and age so we must do what's best to keep them in good working order. So onwards and upwards with the low carb diet.
Best wishes.

I have now purchased a bottle of Lucozade (original) and have a means of accurately measuring 100ml.

If I feel brave I may try the test tomorrow morning on rising. I need to know and yet I hate being disappointed. Knowing and facing up to the truth as best I can are essential for me.

I will let you know the result.

I actually feel nervous of the test, even now.

Good luck. Don't forget to take a bg reading before the test. I read somewhere that they might have diluted the power of lucozade to make it less pure glucose..

The Ogtt used to be the gold standard of diagnostic tests for T2 Diabetes before they switched to the cheap and cheerful HbA1c reading a few years ago. The Ogtt can detect 4 conditions - Type 2, IFG ( Impaired Fasting Glucose, a precursor of T2), IGT (Impaired Glucose Tolerance - not T2 but a can of worms anyway) and non- diabetic.

I may have to delay the test for a day as my wife has just 'flipped' and is rather ill. Sad so sad. She is convinced that intruders are getting into the house causing untold damage (oh hang on, tiny scuff marks). Out to get her. It has worn me down and ruined our marriage from the get go sadly.

Anyway enough of my whinging. Sometimes she recovers late into the night.

I'm on the whisky right now. The only way I can cope with the added stress.

Sounds like such a stressful time Gwynn, hope things calm down soon.

Diabetes is such a journey and so it's always worth checking where you are with things as we can only go by the info we have at hand.

Have a play around with your diet, introduce things and test from there. Given the ups and downs of your diagnosis' I'd expect more tests to be necessary.

Doing an OGTT this morning.

No sign of my wife yet. She usually gets up around 9am

I hope all’s well with your wife @Gwynn and that you have an easier day today.

BTW, I thought it was 300ml Lucozade for an OGTT. I actually had one years ago and I’m pretty sure the quantity I drank was more than 100ml.

Well from what I have read it is 100ml. I will double check and redo tomorrow if I have got it wring.

Quite lijed the lucozade. First time I have tried it too

I'm with @Inka on more Lucozade required.

I can't remember exactly how much I needed but it was 3-400ml if I recall. I messed up a bit and had too much (the "recipe was changing around that time, to lower sugar), and over calculated.

I still passed, but I hated the Lucozade. Waaaaaaay to sweet for me, but I never liked it anyway.

Whilst I think an OGTT can be a useful indicator of how our body is performing in that day, it can't be used to diagnose (or un-diagnose) something in the past - especially when you have trimmed of 35lg in the meantime. That's just too big a drop to draw historic conclusions. All in my view, if course.

Thanks, just been out to buy some powdered glucose. I will repeat the test tomorrow with 75g of glucose in 300ml water.

After 100ml Lucozade and 2Hrs BG this morning was 4.1 so even though the amount of glucose is wrong it is a good indicator that things are ok.

What was your Fasting bg. Two random fasting bgs over 7 used to be one of the Diagnostic criteria for T2 Diabetes.

Gwynn, please also ensure you sit still for the two hours, after the test, as activity can, in some make quite a difference.

When I did mine, I sat on the sofa watching breakfast TV, with my meter at my side, and an alarm to test every 15 minutes, so that I had indications of what happened in that 2 hours.

Start and finish are all very well, but really (again, sorry!) only a small part of the picture. Wearing a Libre would be ideal for this.

Here are my results. I can't believe it was that long ago. I should repeat it sometime:
