The brand new carbs and cals android app is being launched next week - I think iOS users update will come soon. One of the updates is that you can put your own weight in........

I was interested until I read the part about changing to a subscription based app.

I will never ever be conned into any subscription model of software. It is just a way of revenue raising that creeps up on you and in the end you are spending huge amounts of money monthly without realizing it.

There are some unavoidable subscriptions in life, council taxes, water and sewage and telecoms. Others such as software and streaming subscriptions are unnecessary and are ruining many budgets with price creep, it's an insidious practice and should be outlawed.

The subscription part was a turnoff for me too. I already pay a subscription for nutracheck but used carbs and cals as well when guessing foods (eating at others houses etc) as it helped with portion sizes. I’ll keep it for the free year but cancel the subscription so it doesn’t charge me next year I imagine

The fee for the app put me off from getting for quite a while, I don't think I will be bothered with the subscription either.

I don't think I've actually seen the price of the subscription yet, not sure if that's been shared? A year does give plenty of time though to try it out and see which works better for me, Carbs and Cals or Nutracheck, and pick one to subscribe to. Nutracheck is currently £23.99 for a year, which I pay as it's so helpful.

I use carbs and Cals app as it is quite useful but as a subscription offering I don’t think it is worth it, unless there is something being regular added and updated and by that I mean daily I won’t be using it when they switch to subscription service

I love using carbs and cals so I'll see how much the subscription fee will be then decide.

It's not the "how much" to which I object - it's the basic principle which is just wrong. If there is a product that I buy, then it's mine in perpetuity, I have paid for it.
I will not rent something for ever because it is just a licence for them to screw you forever. More and more items that used to be an outright purchase are now moving to this model simply because it's a licence to print money, the banks just love this model.
We as a society are storing up problems for the future with this insidious practice, the intellectually disabled are a prime target for these sharks.

@Lucyr do you use Nutracheck just for the carbs ie not for your weight/dieting and also do you use carbs and cals at the moment as well as Nutracheck?
I use Nutracheck just for the carbs because I don't need to use it for my weight because I don't need to diet. I use carbs and cals too but when I'm working out my carb count I use one or the other.

I mainly use nutracheck for the carbs when I’m making meals as I can input all the seperate veg etc and it sums it up easily. Sometimes I use it for calories but intermittently. I usually use carbs and cals on the rare occasions that I eat at someone else’s house or a restaurant or pub that isn’t on nutracheck, as the pictures help to guess the carbs.

I think it says you will still be able to use carbs & cals without paying the subscription, it just won’t get updated with new foods. If you find there’s enough in it already then not a problem!

Already have the Carbs & Cals app installed? You'll get 1-year free access to the UNLIMITED plan! After this, you can choose to move to the free Starter plan or subscribe to keep using the foods and features in the Unlimited plan

STARTER plan with limited foods and features, available for free.
UNLIMITED plan with the full range of foods and features, for a small monthly or yearly fee.

Yes that’s what I saw. The starter one will be enough for us, don’t use it much any more! And I agree with people who don’t like subscriptions, neither do I!

I've just received an email from Carbs and cals

The app will be available on 2 plans:
STARTER PLAN
The app costs nothing to download and you can get going with the free Starter Plan, which has a limited food database and basic features.

UNLIMITED PLAN
The full food database and all features and functionality are available on the Unlimited Plan. If you love the full app, you can keep using all the foods and features for a small monthly (£6.99) or annual fee (£35.99 ie £3 per month).

Bit of a difference there
£6.99 for 12 months £83!

I'll see what it's like over the coming months then I think I will pay the £35.99 because for me I find it really useful

As I remember I paid for the app a couple of years ago so stepping down to the free „basic“ version doesn’t seem fair, and 6.99 a month or 3.00 a month if you pay yearly doesn’t appeal, it’s not that good so looks like bye bye carbs and Cals

If you are an existing Android user and have previously purchased the old Carbs & Cals app, we're offering access to the Unlimited plan of the new app for 1 year

Yes and then after 1 year you lose it again or you have to keep paying money.
I don’t remember there ever being a “free” version of the app, it was always buy it or don’t have it, so I hope the basic version is the same as that. I don’t know how we survived without it in the first year or so (although mostly used the book, which we were given free when daughter got her first pump), but rarely need it now so if after the year it’s rubbish then I’ll ditch it, i’m not paying that much for something I’ll only use once in a blue moon.

This is a techy version of the paperback, isn't it? I am not in any way a techy person, and it sounds a bit too advanced for me! I find it so easy to just wander to the shelf and take the book down to check anything I happen to be wanting 😉
