Hey all .. so this was a bit of a shock had a heart monitor fitted last week had a call from my cardiologist Tuesday to go through things .. so you’ve got high blood pressure . Yes that’s right .. and obviously you know your diabetic .. sorry what , well the blood test from your dr in jan confirms diabetes have you not been told .. so as you can imagine my mind was blown the tears came and I was a bit dumbfounded .. waiting for an appointment Monday with the DR to confirm as don’t even know what type I am .. really struggling with food ideas anyone have any good suggestions for quick snacks etc as I work for the ambulance service and don’t always have time to make full blown meals xx

Wow I am so sorry you had to hear this way. There are a lot of threads, particularly pertaining to food choices on the forum so I'd suggest looking around

Could you write a letter to your gp about this? It really is kind of shocking.

That’s shocking @emmjj15 - has anyone explained to you why on earth they forgot to tell you?!!
At least you’ve found this forum. There’s lots of knowledgeable friendly folks here...any more questions, just fire away. :D

Welcome to the forum @emmjj15 . I am so sorry you found out this way, how awful for you and shame on your Gp .

My go to snacks are a nice strong cheddar cheese, hard boiled eggs , a few walnuts , if you fancy something sweet how about an eclair, not many carbohydrates in them and imo they are Devine .
I also like sesame seed Ryvitas (sp?)
If you have access to a fridge or are able to carry a lunch box size cool bag that will give you more options, proteins in all it’s forms are fine as are a normal amount of good fats providing you don’t have a condition that that requires you to reduce fat intake ie cardiac or vascular problems.
Greek yogurt is nice too

Do find out what your Hb1ac was as it will help us give you more appropriate advise , ie if it’s 49 you’ve only just stepped over the threshold into our very select club so you won’t need to change-too many things if it’s 90 then you will.

My advise is don’t change things at the moment.
Keep a brutally hones good diary for a while. This will help you see where you can make changes if necessary.
Ask all the questions you need to about diabetes on here
Make a list of questions for the Gp and the diabetes nurse, top of the list imo should be why wasn’t I informed.

That’s great thank you x I will be asking Monday why when I called for my results jab they told me all ok

You are yet another newbie identified as diabetic but not told as much by their GP. This is shocking negligence. Hope you tell them so on Monday.

My preferred snack food is nuts, either as they are or in the form of nut bars or protein bars. ALDI's own, KIND and Nature Valley are all low carb, ie under 10g per bar. Likewise packs of Graze nuts.

Once you know what your HbA1c was (ask) any advice can be tailored as it will depend on how far into the diabetes zone you are. I wouldn't be surprised if you have a new HbA1c test come Monday to see where you are now, 4 months on.

Let us know how things go on Monday.
Thank you so much x

Can be - test results are not supposed to be released to a patient unless they have been first 'reviewed' by a GP. If one or other result isn't where it should be, in which case our hospital path lab where our GP sends all their blood urine and whatever else samples to be tested, marks it as 'outside expected level' anyway to draw it to the GP's attention, and GP then instigates next action. said GP is supposed to check whether his record shows the patient has diabetes, high/low blood sodium, high/low cholesterol, and all that before 'passing' them. Receptionists of course are NOT medically trained so can't answer questions.

Question is what do the lab your Dr uses regard as 'Normal' ?

In December I had my GP annual review so they do all the same blood tests as my hospital D clinic did in the June. My TSH was a bit increased in June so me and D Consultant said we better keep an eye on that. Had increased to nearly 3 from under 0.5 in the January 2020. So a GP (who I've never liked since she insisted I only got ANY insulin by HER specific agreement and no other reason) rang me to complete review and I mentioned the TSH being increased twice in succession 6 months apart so did I need to increase my Thyroxine dosage? No no no absolutely not - they do go up and down all the time! Didn't bother arguing in view of previous crossed swords. Fortunately phone appt with D consultant in January 2021 - Yes indeed - increase the Thyroxine pdq!

Is

this a common thing? X
Yes, Dr Receptionist...my Dr Receptionist explained my blood test results and told me I wasT2 with her extensive knowledge emanating from her father who was diabetic. I was new to the workings of surgeries and was also in great pain with a torn ligament so I accepted the situation. Two years down the line I am much better and now approach the surgery with great caution and with many more questions. If I behaved like Dr Receptionist at my place of work, boy would I be in trouble. Boundaries, boundaries.
Good luck, have a list of questions ready with most important at the top because you probably won't be given all the time you need for them all.

That’s disgraceful. I’m looking forward to hearing their explanation!
