I know a lot of you don't use artificial sweeteners but my other half uses Canderel but we just bought some from Lidl and noticed they had a yellow cup on the dispenser and realised they were based on sucralose not aspartame as the usual ones with the red cup on them. It was not obvious on the packaging only when you looked on the back.
Looking them up on google it appears there are also dispensers with green cups based on Stevia and blue package which is yet another mixture. So if it is important to you beware and check.

I am unsure, but reading into this I think some actually cause tummy upset and can make bm mmols higher. It really might be something to look into but I think a lot of sweeteners are hidden in things like juice and ready meals etc. I find it best like you to know what I am having but cooking from scratch all the time is stressful. It's a huge game-changer all this and good to know green is Stevia as that is plant-based I am thinking it may be better?

I used some erythritol in a crumble topping and also to sweeten some rhubarb and I had a bit of a dodgy stomach but initially didn't associate the two. I think maybe a bit is OK but I will be careful in the future.

I believe erythritol is a Polyol as it ends in ol. It’s well known for causing the trots if you have a little too much of it.

Just checked I was right, it is.

Like the old sweets with sorbitol in them ?

Any sweetener ending in "ol" is an osmotic laxative. Your body can't absorb or digest it, and it draws water from the colon lining loosening the bowel.

Hi, I am new here, I use "XYLITOL" , as an alternative to sugar. It is not cheep, it has a Glycaemic index: of 7. But its carbohydrate is 100%, so you still have to work it off. Its spoon for spoon as sugar and it does not cause tooth decay, it is from Finland made from birch. I don't like sweeteners in tea but ok in coffee, I hope this helps. I know it ends in OL but I have had no bowel problems with it.

Hopefully you have no dogs, as xylitol is extremely poisonous to dogs (possibly also cats?), can be fatal.

Still ends in 'ol'!

Sorry, edit to say welcome to the forum!

Hi, sorry to ask on your site but what do people recommend for sugar ? I am partial to rhubarb so going to miss my crumbles but with yoghurt it will still need sweetening ? Thanks

Hi, if you don't have any pets, again I use "XYLITOL" , as an alternative to sugar spoon of spoon and its not bad to teeth.

Hi, but I have seen people with dogs and cats that have foxgloves and tiger lilies etc. in there garden which are extremely poisonous to pets and humans,
Thanks for the welcome

I really limit the amount of artificial sweetener I use and I absolutely love my coffee with cream now, instead of sugar or sweetener but for the likes of rhubarb which is just too tart and needs a little help, I use 2 or 3 Sweetex or Candarel. I have tried the various other options like Stevia and Xylitol and Erythritol but I really don't like the taste of the polyols. I am even toying with going back to a very tiny amount of brown sugar or honey or orange or strawberry pulp for things like rhubarb as my gut feeling is that artificial sweeteners are not good for us either and it might be a case of choosing your poison.

I think it is important to increase your sensitivity to sweetness by cutting right back on it all (I was a sugar addict pre diagnosis so this was essential for me) and then slowly adding a bit back in for the things that really need it. I have cupboards full of all the different sweeteners I have tried but I am becoming disillusioned with them all.

But they are in all gardens your cat will stay away from them usually . You’d not put them in the same room but outside where a cat can go are fine daffodils are poisonous too. The sweetener is likewise not given to cats so Tis safe . Onions are poisonous are they saying no onions in any house too? Some go overboard lol

Hi, on the packet of XYLITOL I have it tells you that its only highly toxic to dogs and only bad to humans (can cause stomach ache or diarrhoea) if you have it in high doses. I have been having it for 2 years and never have anything like that. Sometimes Metformin gives me diarrhoea.

Metformin is the worst drug to me on earth .

Bit of a high risk using it for baking, however careful you are, some dogs are thieves.
Yes, onions are not good for dogs, but effects are less dangerous than xylitol.

I think the moral of the story is Be aware but at least you will know you have it and what you put it in. The danger must be more when it’s in peanut butter you are given to the dog as a treat.

I agree that it feels wise to have as few artificial sweeteners as possible. Though it’s interesting to see how they are making it into all sorts of recipes and not just ‘diet‘ ones these days. Especially with the pesky sugar tax on soft drinks. I am now drinking double-quantities of reduced sugar Lucozade as a hypo treatment (so they can avoid the tax), but they’ve added artificial sweeteners in to get it to taste as sweet as it used to. Madness! 🙄

Welcome to the forum @mack2021 - slightly unusual for a T1 to be on metformin. Have you been diagnosed long? Did you have some signs of insulin resistance?
