Please can anyone shed some light on what is the process for getting an upgrade to Libre 2 - NHS funded/ on prescription - so far Abbott is pointing to NHS to do something ; NHS is pointing at Abbott ;GP is pointing to hospital - so zilch = stalemate. Son is already on Libre 1 - prescription/ NHS funded - so in my simple mind is just a straight switch (as no extra cost and Libre 1 is being phased out anyway) . Seems to be down to getting the prescription switched by a medic - but NHS is looking to Abbott and so we go round in circles - talk about left hand doesn't know what right hand is doing! .

His next consultant hospital appointment isn't until the summer - meanwhile his quality of life is urghh! Hoping Libre 2 will help - if only a bit .. as every little helps! Any ideas to help break the stalemate sooner / speed up the process - which seems to be a wait and be told what to do - while he continues to feel awful cos of many lows / spikes - day and night ( not waking from them either).

Can't even buy Libre 2 without some darn letter or other from hospital / GP - ie doctor saying they prescribe and upgrade is ok -understandably I know.

Seems such a simple thing to do but a huge task to achieve ... PS - CCG is Croydon/ SWL

Many thanks .

Any thoughts welcome please.

Not all CCg's have it on their prescribing list yet so I'm afraid it's a wait until they do situation

In my area in Scotland I received a letter on Saturday telling me it would be an automatic switch but a phased rollout, discuss at next review or I could request a switch early by completing the new modules on Libre Academy, requesting the upgraded Libre 2 reader and them emailing the address supplied, I did it that night and am currently waiting on word

How old is your son? And what insulin regime is he on? If he's constantly rollercoasting it may be worth looking at his insulin doses as well than just hold out hope for the Libre 2 cause it could be a while before you obtain it unfortunately
xx

ahh .. that helps ..... anyone know where to see the CROYDON /SWL CCG prescribing list? ? So I can show said clinician and move things forward by showing the list!

I now have a message in with the chap that handles prescribing at the GP so that might help ... x fingers ...

Yes agree nurse on insulin etc .. next step ... .

Many thanks ....

Sorry I've tried googling it but couldn't find anything
xx

In my CCG, my hospital-based DSN send a letter to my GP.
Without the letter, my GP would not change my prescription.
But Abbott were not involved.

I had to commit to use up all my Libre 1 before switching over as the NHS had funded these.

so in my simple mind is just a straight switch
That's also what Partha Kar thinks. There's no sane reason why a CCG would need to consider this. The questions ought to be whether the thing needs to be added to the software (so GPs can order it), and about supply: i.e., purely technical things. Along with whether there are reasons why particular patients can use the sensors (which might be an issue if a patient has a too old Reader).

May not be any help as a different part of the country (Northants) but I was speaking to someone in the Community Diabetes Team on another matter and mentioned it in passing. She said, oh just ask your GP to change it as it doesn't cost any more, which I did, and had my first two L2 sensors within the week!

My theory is that it's probably worth mentioning it to anyone and everyone you can think of and eventually someone will run with it. Good luck!

A lot of people have requested it through their GP just asking for libre 2 sensors instead of libre 1. I'm not sure if all GPs are switching people but it is worth a shot.

😛 .. oh my .... what a palaver! I will do all of these things - something must work! Hopefully sooner rather than later! Thank you everyone!! Now re- energised to take action!
Happy days! But I guess there is a small pandemic on ... ... NHS is v busy and am very grateful to it .... patience ... needed.

I don’t think the reader would be a problem as I called Libre customer care line today and there is an option on it to get new reader to replace old one for free. The GP needs to update prescription, no extra cost so should be simple in principle. I have a great nurse who deals with all diabetes stuff at GP surgery and she always goes out of her way to help - makes such a difference! I have an appointment with her tomorrow to sort out getting mine on prescription (it’s taken some time for her to argue that I should have it and provide my improved results to get approval) so fingers crossed it goes well!
I really hope you get it sorted soon as I know how hard it is when you are young (I was diagnosed at 10 yrs) to control things. 36 years later and it’s still a struggle at times but I find the alarms have really helped a lot. Good luck. x

I am an adult I have purchased the Libre2 from Abbott without anything letter.

Partha Kar said on Twitter the other say that the areas that were being slow at transferring to Libre2 are those that were slow at rolling out the Libre.

Maybe so, but I know several type ones who have requested their switch through their GP and got it, so it's still worth a shot.

When I did my training webinar for the Libre 1, my hospital said they were asking people to wait until their next routine clinic appointment to ask to switch to the Libre 2, and not to bother your clinic in the meantime because they were all very busy having had staff diverted to Covid areas.
Having said that, however, if someone would benefit from having one sooner because they are struggling, I think they should be talking to their diabetes team anyway, and to ask for it early in such circumstances seems eminently reasonable.

I tried that route, but didn’t get anywhere, GP said it has to come from the hospital.

Ordered reader from Abbott, arrived in days. Had to wait for libre 2 to be approved by trust, after that DSN sent request to gp to change prescription, big improvement on 1 so far.

My GP wouldn’t prescribe the Libre 2 without approval from the diabetes time.

The last I heard, the suggestion was to wait until your next regular review appointment and ask about the switch then - I think this was intended to help keep pressure off overstretched diabetes departments while many staff members have been redeployed doing covid things?
