Can anybody advise what you could add to salad to make it a bit more tasty or a dressing that is not high in carbs/sugar, either homemade or shop bought.

My salads are quite tasty on their own - but then they do have a base of prepacked salad, plus celery, cucumber, radishes, coleslaw, tomato, sweet pepper, a slice of onion chopped fine - and anything else in the fridge which might do.
If I am making a salmagundi then I add an oil and vinegar dressing to chopped lettuce or sliced tomato.

I always have coleslaw.... usually cheese coleslaw from Lidl which is delicious. I love balsamic vinegar so a drizzle of that. Avocado is a regular feature to make it creamy along with the obvious lettuce, cucumber and a couple of cherry tomatoes and a pepper and maybe some spring onions or red onion finely sliced. I will usually serve that with an omelette with a filling of onion and mushrooms and cheese, or have it with prawns or tuna with mayonnaise, or fillet steak.... or sometimes just with the cheese coleslaw.

Strawberries, got salad in restaurant once it came with chopped up strawberries sprinkled over it, ever since been part of our salads. Old hat but like salad cream on my salad, not high carb at around 2.5g carbs each tbsp.

Thank you all for your replies, just trying to sort out nice meals to have but to keep it as healthy as possible, what breakfast is best to have to keep your carbs low, looking at cereals some seem pretty high.

ooking at cereals some seem pretty high.
All cereals are pretty high but that doesn't mean you wouldn' tolerate them, the only way to know whether you can tolerate things is to test BG before eating and then again 2 hours after looking for no more than a 2-3mmol rise, as for lower carb, omelettes, greek yoghurt and berries etc xx

I currently have two BIG dessert spoon dollops of creamy Greek Natural yoghurt with 3 teaspoons of thawed frozen berries (I am actually using sour cherries from Lidl at the moment for a change) with a dessert spoon of mixed seeds also from Lidl and a little sprinkle of their Deluxe Nutty Granola on the top... total about 25g carbs. Nature Valley Protein bars are just under 10g carbs per bar, so one of those makes a useful "grab and go" breakfast. As suggested, an omelette is a great low carb option and you can vary the fillings to keep it interesting and use up leftovers. Mushrooms and cheese and ham and peppers and onion and courgettes and aubergines are some of my favourite fillings.

I never have cereals and don't normally eat any grain - but my meter tells me that is a good idea for me.
I normally have two meals a day and just have ordinary, for me meals. I have no more than 10 gm of carbs in the morning as I am more resistant to insulin then.

In salads I love celery and radish for a bit of crunchy texture. Add in some feta and some olives and make up a dressing with extra virgin olive oil and either balsamic or sherry vinegar - perfect! Tom Kerridge in his book "Dopamine Diet" replaces croutons with pork scratchings. I've not tried this one but will do one day

Eggs are good for breakfast especially with bacon!

For a bit of extra texture to my salads, I often sprinkle seeds over the top.
And for something a bit different to the usual raw veg, I may cook up a tray of roasted veg at night and include that, chilled, in my salad the next day.
I'm a bit of a spice fiend so I may add some chilly sauce - just a couple of drips of tobasco in my dressing or piri piri on my griddled halloumi

@helli try sprinkling some Aleppo Chilli flakes over your salad. Lovely flavour and I regularly do this when I cook middle eastern food. Last night I did lamb and mint kofte with creamed spinach and a cabbage salad and of course added in the Aleppo

Oooo ... you're such a tease. I'll take a look for Aleppo Chilli flakes. My partner is already worried by the number of different types of chillis and chilli sauces we have in the cupboard. But they all have their uses.🙂
For the general thread, I can't believe I forgot to mention Sriracha mayo. Perfect with burger and probably goes well with salad too.

I love mayo and Sriracha. I mix the two together when I cook meats in the griddle pan (or the BBQ in the summer).

I recently used up a box of expensive cereal that had been bought for my son who could not eat , and I had to measure out a portion that took a few days to find what portion had least effect. I think it was about half the portion on the box.

I like beetroot and pickles with my salad nice sharp tastes.

Me too @Olive!

You can make a salad dressing at home with a little olive oil, balsamic vinegar and a dab of dijon mustard to help them mix. Then add salt, pepper and herbs if you like that kinda thing
