Hi all, my name's Lyn. My partner was diagnosed type 2 in October and we're still finding our feet with it all. It was a shock to us, and to the practice nurse, who said he didn't fit the usual profile.

I'm here to look for help when specific issues as they arise. Looking forward to chatting to you all.

That is what we are here for.
Just ask any questions that you have.

Getting to know how many carbs you are eating at each meal can be a big help.
All the carbs you eat get changed into glucose once inside you. With T2 the body is not able to balance the amount of glucose with enough insulin (with T1 the body stops making any insulin eventually). Reducing the amount of carbs (different foods/smaller portions) can get this balance back.

If your husband doesn’t fit the susan profile for T2 this could be because he ‘doesn’t fit the usual profile for T2’ or because he is actually a late starter with T1 (as I was, at the age of 53). Keep this in mind if things do not improve.

Fire away with any questions that arise. This is a manageable condition it just takes a bit of adaptation and planning.

Hiya - would you please elaborate on the bit about 'doesn't fit the usual profile' please? How did the diabetes come to light (what symptoms etc), and what tests have they actually done in order to prove that he is absolutely Type 2?

@Elrohana Many people don't fit the popular perception for a Type 2 For example it is thought that 10% are slim at diagnosis and have never been more than a little overweight (like me).
However looking back on it my clogged arteries (requiring a 3x bypass) should have been a sign that I was carbohydrate intolerant and had inflammation caused by high insulin. Just that most GP's say Diabetics are at risk of heart disease not the other way around. Plus they still think that the problem is Cholesterol and Saturated fat, when it is really just more carbohydrates than the body can handle!

Feel free to ask away with any questions you have. We have literally centuries of lived diabetes experience on the forum, so someone will most likely have already worked through whatever it is!

If you would like a some background reading, members here frequently recommend Maggie Davey’s Letter and Gretchen Becker’s book, as very helpful starting points.
