Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I’ve been T2 for a couple of years on metformin and three weeks ago was called in to clinic at hospital after having bloods and feeling rubbish.
My diabetes is secondary to pancreatic insufficiency. Anyone suffer from this as everywhere I have asked no one seems to?
I’ve now been put on insulin injections and have had to over come my fear of needles.
So I await the phone call appointment today where they are on about injections at meal times.
I’m a coach driver ( group 2) and been told I cannot drive either group 2 or group 1 by the consultant until I hear from dvla. Luckily my employer is keeping my job open for now but this won’t always be the case.
That’s enough of my waffle so thank you for letting join

Welcome to the forum @Steve 4789

Sorry to hear about the changes to your diabetes - does this mean that you are classified as Type 3c now?

I believe the DVLA will need to review 3 months of readings from a BG meter download in order to consider your Group 2 licence.

I know that DVLA are trying to improve their processes at the moment, because of the pressures of the pandemic

DUK circulated this update recently:

Group 2 Driver Assessments
In response to the service disruptions caused by the pandemic, the DVLA have been looking to streamline the current three stage approach where Group 2 drivers have to do self-assessment, then see their GP/diabetologist and finally have an independent diabetologist assessment.
They are currently piloting an approach where Group 2 drivers see a diabetes consultant remotely for the annual assessment and skip GP /person’s own diabetologist stage. As this is a pilot, nothing has changed at the moment. But the DVLA are actively seeking to address any delays caused by the pandemic.
Hopefully your transition to insulin will be smooth and successful, and you’ll begin to see much improved BG levels with it, but be able to avoid hypos.

Let us know how things go

What is type 3c as I’ve not herd of this?
I’m guessing I’m still type 2 but just looking at my next appointment with clinic I’m being seen in type 1 clinic so I’m unsure now. When they phone me I will ask

It's the classification for people who develop diabetes related to pancreatitis, or another condition which requires full or partial removal of the pancreas

Not many GPs have heard of it either!

Do you take Creon as part of your medication?

We have a few 3cs on the forum who may be able to give you some pointers - @eggyg is our 'poster girl' for 3c 🙂

Hi @Steve 4789 as Mike says I’m a Type 3c ( thanks for girl part BTW) but only after doing my own research after being diagnosed Type 2 after pancreatic surgery 13 years ago. I started taking insulin 6 years ago and it changed my life. I started to feel “ normal” whatever your perception of normal is. The needles are teeny tiny and nothing like the ones they use to extract blood from you, which I’m sure you must have had done many times. It becomes a way of life and you have more freedom on what you can eat. Although as like me I’m sure fatty stuff has an adverse effect on you! As a Type 3c you should be treat the same as Type 1 and educational courses, online at the moment, should be offered to you to teach you about life on insulin. I had to fight for that but I got there in the end. Any questions please ask away. Elaine.

Hi ya.
So I had a phone call from the clinic and I asked what grade do I fall/be treated in?
They didn’t really tell me but when I asked about type c3 they said no.
Now I’ve done some reading up on this and it does sound like my symptoms but can only go on what I’m told. Diabetic due pancreatic insufficiency.
Come Friday I will be told if I need insulin at meal times.
