I think this is the correct forum for this.
I have diabetes II under control by Gliclazide and Metformin. I am on Dr Moseley's 5:2 diet to keep weight constant and sensible: I eat normally (for me) on 5 days of the week and have around 900 Kcals on low calories days. It all seems to work pretty well. Sometimes on walks on low calorie days I have a mild hypo, corrected by two Dexrtro Energy tablets and a biscuit. Mind you a hypo sometimes can occur on an ordinary day.
My question is this: on low calorie days and the following night, i pass urine frequently, much more frequently than on ordinary days. Is this my metabolism switching to starvation mode and generating ketone bodies that the kidneys are very keen to flush away? Also is this dangerous and what can I do about this if it is. Or maybe the urinating is due to something different?

Many thanks,

How low are your hypos, and what do the 2 Dextro Tabs and a biscuit take you up to and how long do they take to do it.

It is unusual for a Type 2 to have a problem with high Ketones. Type 1 diabetics sometimes suffer from DKA in which both Ketones and Blood Glucose spike through the roof. But nutritional Ketosis is benign and is associated with low/normal BG levels when either eating very low carbs (say 20gms per day or so) or when fasting.

I'm surprised that you seem to accept hypos on 'Low Carb days'. If it was me, I would be exploring the Glic dosage for those days.

Though to be honest I wouldn't be using 5:2 when on Glic in the first place - better to have a more constant daily intake of carbs (which could be low carb normal calorie every day) in order to avoid the chance of hypos.

Thank you guys, I will look at this properly very soon and let you know what i do about it.
Very helpful,

peter

I came off Gliclazide a few years ago as I was getting hypos and my HBA1C had reduced, even taking the slow release version.

Guys, as promised, my next move.
I will not take Gliclazide on my low calorie days and see how that works out. My HBA1C is usually ok nowadays, partly I guess because of my 5:2 diet.
