At risk of diabetes
Hi, I’m at v.high risk of diabetes. GP sent me on pre-diabetic course but this abruptly ended in March when it was paused due to lock down. Nothing from these people since. In meantime I’ve gained too much weight through anxiety and comfort eating. Just had a relaxing holiday and decided to use the diabetes.org site to help me lose weight. Balance magazine recommended Almased to assist with weight loss so I’ve ordered this. Any tips or a buddy very welcome

Hi Diane, sorry to hear that your on the same train as myself, I was told thursday oh by the way your pre diabetes..that was it...no more help or information nothing...just told nothing, i have a reading of 41 which i dont understand and yes I am over weight to, lately ive been feeling pretty much sick, i have been saying for a while now i have blurred vision but was told to see an eye specialist, went there and was due to go back in march, but covid 19 put that plan out the window, i am feeling pretty ill today and i dont know if its a bug or what, my gp is a total loss along with the new nurse i feel let down between both of them, But anyway I hope you really succeed in your weight loss plan, I have started also, its a long road that we both will see the end,,, Good Luck x

Hi @DianeCatCrazy and hello again to @babyb1. Just made a couple comments on your post @babyb1.

If you read around the forum you will find lots of members who are or have been in the same position as your selves. Told you have pre-diabetes and then left to get on with it without a lot of support. This is where the forum can help. We have lots of members who started where you are now, a bit lost and a bit bewildered, and who have got things back on track. Read around the forum and start asking questions, we are here to help.

I’m just fed up with my GP surgery saying due to COVID-19, blah blah, no help or support. Made me really anxious about what to do. But now I’m in a positive frame of mind, I’m going to use these forums and use the Learning on this website. Good luck to you too x

I’ve seen the advert for Almased aswell and thought about getting some as I’ve got at least 4 stone to lose. I’m just not sure if it has sugar in it ?!

Almased was mentioned on the forum before some years ago.

I thought the comment about the FDA in the US requiring them to amend their claims was interesting.

While the company pay to advertise in the Balance magazine, I am not aware that it is officially endorsed by Diabetes UK, but will ask.

I think gradually changing your diet by moderating and reducing your carbohydrate intake, and choosing the types of carbohydrate that suit your BG best is much more likely to improve tour diabetes management (and far cheaper!) than taking a supplement - and many members find a moderate-low carb approach helps them lose weight too, and with the right balance of good fats helps them feel full and reduces cravings 🙂

Thanks it’s wrong to put it in the magazine if it’s not actually okay for diabetics who are desperate to lose weight.
Anyway I am doing what you’ve suggested since July and my HbA1c has gone from 80 to 70 without medication. I’m on the right track it’s just my weight

I will feed that back to Diabetes UK, thank you 🙂

I have heard back from Mark Donovan, Diabetes UK’s advertising manager who says that Diabetes UK work with advertisers to generate income which helps offset the production costs of our publications, however, DUK do not endorse any product or service advertised. Although all adverts in publications are approved for inclusion by the in-house clinical team, DUK recommend first speaking with your GP or nurse to check if any health management products or services advertised are suitable for you.

There is also a disclaimer to this effect at the beginning of the magazine
ADVERTISEMENTS AND ARTICLES: Products and services advertised in Balance are not necessarily recommended by Diabetes UK. Although the utmost care is taken to ensure products and services advertised are accurately represented it is only possible to thoroughly check specialist diabetes equipment. Please exercise your own discretion about whether or not an item or service advertised is likely to help you personally and, where appropriate, take professional advice from your medical advisor.
Please note that any prices are applicable only to British buyers and may vary for overseas purchases. Paid adverts do not represent the views of Diabetes UK. Complaints regarding advertised services or products should be addressed to: Marc Donovan, Advertising Manager, Wells Lawrence House, 126 Back Church Lane, London E1 1FH, or email marc.donovan@diabetes.org.uk

I can understand the confusion, particularly if you saw an earlier version of the Almased advert that was designed to look like an article. I think DUK are looking into ways to ensure that all adverts and ’advertising features‘ are clearly identifiable.

I think the key point is that not every product advertised in Balance is going to be suitable for every reader. So, readers should use their own judgement and consult with their HCP if appropriate. Perhaps particularly where it comes to weight loss - where you should consult with your healthcare professional before starting any weight loss programs.

Hope this helps 🙂

I think i may have read this at one time, as I have never taken any ads as endorsements.
