Relationship to Diabetes
Hi All, for the past 17 weeks my wife (Type 2, metformin, empagliflozin) has been on an almost zero carb diet because all of a sudden any form of carbohydrate seemed to send her levels through the roof (27 at one point!) and caused her massive headaches and complete fatigue with infections to follow. Her Diabetic nurse and doctors cannot explain what is happening and has said that she is "only a borderline diabetic" according to her blood tests but this is obviously because she is not having the carbs. They want to test her blood properly but to do this she obviously needs to try and eat the carbs they want but she doesn't want to feel they way she does. Any ideas??

Hi Phil, welcome to the forum 🙂 How long has your wife been diagnosed? If she can no longer tolerate any carbs (or very small amounts) then there may be a possibility that she needs further investigation into whether she is actually Type 2. There is a form of diabetes called LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adulthood) which is a slow-onset form of Type 1 diabetes where the pancreas gradually loses the ability to produce sufficient insulin, until there comes a point where it fails almost completely. This process can take months, or even years, and the final 'tipping point' can be an infection which overwhelms the body's systems. Certainly, it's clear that her current medication is insufficient, which must be very difficult and restrictive for her, and she needs some extra help so she can enjoy a broader diet :( It's not uncommon for LADA to be misdiagnosed as Type 2, but it is relatively rare so not all GPs or Practice Nurses may be aware of it.

Is she seen at her surgery or by a consultant?

Very strange Phil ? Its like getting blood from a stone. Power from nothing, There is sugar in just about everything. Good luck finding what the cause is I wished I had a car that was powered on that 🙂

Hope your wife gets a clear diagnosis/idea of what's going on soon @Phil78 - must be worrying for you both.

Hello Phil, welcome to the forum 🙂 That sounds very scary, hope you can get it sorted...back to the docs I think...
