Ypsomed/Libre 3 HCL - questions

The well known daft questions from a new user over the first weekend.
Anyone know, please.

So it seems the 'Auto Mode' works OK because in the early hours of this morning CamApp FX on my phone was telling me the Libre was telling me my BG was 3.1 but when I looked at he pump it was apparently still delivering my usual hourly rate at that time. Odd, I thought cos I feel perfectly alright, no hypo feeling at all so just carried on watching 'Uncanny' on TV that we'd recorded cos Pete had watched the Rugby and I'd fallen asleep anyway. Then the pump beeped and told me again so I FP'd and I was nowhere near hypo and in the finish after more of those and vibrations, Automode did reduce my hourly basal to 0.00u.

Question - how long does that usually take?

When the Automode pump screen shows th hourly rate of eg 0.50u then underneath says eg 0.29h - what on earth does the 0.29h convey?

@trophywench The 0.29h under the rate is the time the rate is set for. I have found if I leave the phone somewhere, and the connection is lost, the time under the rate is the amount of time before the loop turns off. If next to phone the time displayed is how long that rate is set for, although the rate sometimes changes throughout that time. The system changes the rate a lot... if you look in the history there are so many entries showing how much the system adjusts the rate.

When I had the pump but not hcl I used to put my libre 2 in early to give it time to settle, but with the libre 3 even more, as the readings from it are used by the system without having to be agreed by you. So if the sensor is reading wrong it has more potential to affect things.

It takes some getting used to, not trying to predict what it is doing and let it do it... After years of making adjustments and making decisions it does feel odd to know the pump and sensor can communicate and decide things without you even knowing...

I hope you find the looping helpful @trophywench and look forward to hearing of your progress. I found handing over the responsibility to the looping at first, but glad that I stuck with it.

Can I just ask what phone you use as I am being moved to closed loop downloaded camsaps and done the training but when it gets to the sensor i was told it should have dexcom and libre 3 but my app only has dexcom on the list for cgm

Brilliant the first day, organised chaos mainly, since.
Snap! It’s settled down today though (5 days in). I hope yours settles down ASAP!

Good to know we’ve a few experienced hands getting to grips with CamAPS. We’ve got forum ‘hive mind’ coverage of most of the Hybrid Closed Loop systems I think.

I think but not 100% certain yet that my insulin absorption has significantly improved to what it was years ago to the extent that I'm fibbing to it for carb amounts to ensure I get less bolus than the calculation calculates since I'd gone hypo the previous 2 nights - it's set at 1u to 10g 24/7. But like I'm not just knocking off 5 or 10% - last night we had a steak slice, mash, white cabbage and gravy. The slice packet said 37g CHO and I've always called that 35g before. The mash I think was c 30g - there again perhaps it was nearer 25. Cabbage doesn't count (and I deliberately didn't put any butter whatsoever in either the mash (just milk) or the cabbage) and gravy made the lazy way with Tesco's OB granules (Bisto but cheaper) - and we both like it thick enough to 'coat the back of a spoon' hence that wouldn't reduce the carbs but I've never in my life actually allowed any for it before, so call the total 60 then. Takes me a good while to eat these days so I actually waited till I'd practically finished eating before bolusing and told it 45g. 2 or 3 hours later I had a biscuit 12g plus a bit later I had a tiddly bit of cheese and one cream cracker, neither of which did I tell the pump about.

When I look at the graph the next morning it shows a completely flat line - I will have to look at Libre View to see what that looks like.

The easiest thing would be if I changed my insulin to carb ratio but banned from doing any such thing at the moment however speaking to DSN at 3pm so I'll have to see what they advise.

Sounding good @trophywench but it does sound like carb ratio needs changing.

Once you have your head round it all, it would be good to have a list of rat variables available to you in looping to add to the list Mike and I have started. Useful for comparisons and as reminders for others.

I loop with camaps though with Dana/Dexcom combination. I would suggest checking your ratios with your dsn, and one don’t want to hypo but I would def mention you are ‘lying’ to system at this point as it is in the learning phase. Certainly on my combo you can add carbs with ‘add meal’ function. This tells the system you are taking in carbs but it will not add insulin unless blood sugar starts rising. I often split bolus in the system as well. Giving a certain amount of carbs up front then either using slowly absorbed meal or add meal for the rest if I am not sure I need the full whack of insulin upfront or if I am going to be exercising etc. DSN can hopefully advise you
