I have known for a while that I'm 'pre-diabetic' but each year after my blood tests I'm told, 'everything looks fine.' I have just weighed and measured myself, and I'm horrified! I'm now almost 69 and my waist is 110cm, I'm 1.78 cm tall and I weigh 100kg!
I'm a bread lover, so giving up on crusty fresh bread will be agony for me, also potatoes and rice will have to be strictly limited.
I would appreciate any advice that anyone can offer.

I find i can tolerate a few new potatoes but mash is no good. Why not start by trying to reduce your portions.
 
Welcome to the forum, Laura Randelli. Managing blood glucose levels and weight is as much about portion control as limiting types of food. Plus physical activity is very important.

I recently discovered Jerusalem artichokes. They cook up crisper than potatoes, have a lovely nutty flavor and according to my diabetic nurse count as zero carbs (although you may wish to verify that bit). Unfortunately they seem to have a short growing season and not always easy to find in supermarkets due to 'lack of demand'.

I love Jerusalem artichokes, but you have to be careful, the 'after effects' can rival the gas produced by Metformin users!

I find proper bakery bread, not mass produced supermarket c**p, is tolerated better. I will only cut myself one modest slice but lashings of lovely butter and it doesn't cause too much of a spike. High protein bread, again I only have 1 slice as toast but I would rather have a slice of proper bread.

Chips spike my blood sugar so I avoid. Sweet potato wedges are not too bad but it's a small portion. I can also eat a small jacket potato. You need to test your blood sugar before and after food to see what you can tolerate as we are all different.
