All went well. The new clinic didn't tell me off, were happy about my figures etc.
It would have been a 100% positive experience, but my dexcom alarm went off ! Rather embarrasing.
What are your positive or negative diabetes check up stories?

What’s embarrassing about a dexcom alarm going off in a diabetes appointment? Just shows them how useful it is.

I suppose... i have mine set at 5 so wasn't as if i was very low

Still important for you to have alarms wherever you are though, if it wasn’t important for you to know your bg hit 5 then you wouldn’t have an alarm set for it.

True. Grat thing About dexcom is it will keep alarming, unlike libre which gives you one alarm only, which is a bit scary at night cos you can fall back to sleep having taken insufficient glucose and it doesn't wake you up again
Also you can set different night time alarm levels...mine are more like 4.5 at night vos i have no quck acting insulin on board so bs change slower

Sounds good @Tdm

I should jolly well hope your new clinic didn’t ‘tell you off’!

Hope it’s the beginning of a new and positive partnership with your diabetes care 🙂

Sadly, I occasionally read about people with type 2 being criticised at their annual review.
Thankfully, this seems to be a thing of the past for those of us with Type 1 ... at least from those of us more active with our management who are more likely to be on the forum.

After the last 2 I’d rather just not have the annual reviews

Unfortunately, my first endo was just plain nasty - I endured her for 10 years - and her advice was just wrong most of the time (no correction doses, eg). Thankfully, I found this forum, got educated, and started ignoring her advice.

So glad to hear your appointment went well @Tdm. 🙂

I haven’t had a review yet, so I have that joy to come.

I was only diagnosed (type 2) a couple of months ago so I was wondering is it normal to be diagnosed then wait a year for any checks to be done, I thought an initial check to get a base line to compare with next year would be good. I had my first eye screening test within a month of diagnosis but no one has checked my feet or any other checks needed so far.

I’d say that’s fairly normal, people mainly seem to have a review after 3 months if their a1c was very high eg 100s. If you have BG or feet concerns make an appointment though.

Thank you, I feel a little more at ease now I know I haven’t missed something whilst transferring to another surgery.

That endo sounds like a old dinosaur from a bygone age @Bloden

I would say you should push for a review after 3 months, an HbA1C at that point will tell you if the measures you have been taking are effective. It is no good waiting for a whole year. If at that point you have made progress and Hba1C is on a downward track then OK one year is then usual but if things are not going too well then a review after a further 3 months is a good idea. You may have to be proactive about that.

I phoned the practice to ask for my blood test result, which had come down from 77 to 51, which I’m very pleased about, but they won’t let me come off the meds even though I’m still having some side effects and have been told to wait another 3 months and get another blood test. I’m so pleased I’ve joined this forum as I’m getting much better help and guidance than I’m getting from the Diabetes Team at the surgery.

well done on the reduction, if a1c is 51 with the meds then it would be higher without so you do need to stay on them. You should be able to switch to a different med if the side effects are too bad though.

Nothing to feel embarrassed about. Good to hear your appointment went well.

My consultant told me it was very common for people to have alarms going off as there can be a lot of stress around appointments, and also a chance to offload. He has a box of tissues to hand and never takes a Bg as it will not be typical.

I have been fortunate enough to have had the same consultant since diagnosis and I have never felt told off, just supported. His focus has been on enabling to manage my own condition. He does not bring up any numbers unless I do. He was however delighted when I started to set myself much more realistic targets For TIR. He had been gently encouraging me to do this for a long while.

Not such a good experience with the GP initially as they are not specialists but the overall balance now works well.

That is far too long to endure someone like that. Glad you found the forum.

I've never had appointments with any Consultants, only DSN initially and now only the GP surgery. At one surgery review the nurse told me i'd "put on a significant amount of weight" and told me off. Well considering i'd lost almost 5 stone at diagnosis, i'm not surprised and also there was lockdown and i hadn't had any checks. It made me feel awful.

At my last review all was ok although the surgery nurse offered me an appointment with a dietician as my BMI was higher than they like. I told her my average days meals/carb amounts etc and she said it was pointless referring then as there was nowhere for me to cut down really. I would like to lose some weight so its just down to exercising more really.
