Given the publication of the second letter in Balance, the magazine of Diabetes UK, regarding the injection of insulin in public.

Are you considering cancelling your membership of Diabetes UK?

Its already done 😡😡😡😡

i havent had a membership with duk for a while but i did give a regular amount to them every month which i have now stopped and will not resume.

What about those of us who aren't DUK members and have definitely decided not to be as a result of Insulingate? :D

Answer as though you're a member. Just interesting to build up a picture of the board...

This is only one persons view. I think we all need to be tolerant of others feelings and needs. I know it is not easy sometimes, the world is a diverse place.

At present I don't inject, but as a type 2 I know this is likely to change in the future.

When I test at work, I do it at my desk and always warn those near by as a couple of my colleagues have problems with needles or blood. If I realy needed to be out of the way, I could use the toilets which are veery clean, or as long as I am accompanied by a first aider, the first aid room, but not everyone has those luxuries.

As a group we need to raise awareness of our needs, but we also need to be awre of the needs of others too.

In a world where there are so many minorites and such a huge mix of needs and cultures, it is almost like walking through a minefield in a suit of armour with a blindfold on.

For me at present, DUK is one of my means of support along with these forums.

i aint a member but if i had of been id of cancelled

I think it's a shame that this has overshadowed the many good articles that appear in Balance. I'm going to give them some time to realise just how upset people have been about this and issue a proper apology.

There are better ways to express a contrary view, and I have no objection to a well-considered and sensitively worded opinion appearing that does not conform to my own views. The first letter was aggressive and confrontational and the second hit new heights in unfounded, insulting name-calling and vehemence - it should not have been printed in that form, the letter writer should have been asked to rephrase it and resubmit it.

I whole heartedly agree that they should NOT have allowed the 2nd letter to be published but surely DUK do some REALLY good stuff too?

Not long ago someone went on a family break and said how great it was, also do they not do some great work promoting Diabetes to the general public.

I fell like yes the did make a huge mistake and some jobsworth is responsible and should maybe removed from their post but DUK as a whole is a great support organisation for many people, I wouldn't have found this site for 1.

Sorry if you disagree, but have to be honest.

I voted "Waiting to see how DUK react". I am a bit wary of DUK now. Ever since they allowed the change 4 life campaign to go ahead when it was very misleading, it made me wonder how great they are! And their statement they left here was REALLY bad and unapologetic.

It sounds like they've been really unhelpful when it comes to this message board too, which is the best resource for diabetics in my opinion. The only time they had anything to do with it was to defend themselves and it wasn't in an official way, otherwise Kati would have had something to do with it.

i think they do have a good programe for these weekend they do. however what else good have done???? nothing. a total and utter big fat zilch. the diabetes awearness they are trying to raise is very very flawed. have you seen the adverts with the kids saying if he eats to much and doesnt exercise enough he will become a type 2 diabetic!!! he might not!!!!! he may have a genetic disorder that he will be bloody superman!!!! how can anyone say the diabetes awearness they promote is a good thing!!!!! they have had their day now and need to be replaced. i for one will never give another penny to them. i will find another diabetes charity who are willing to listen to what we the diabetics say and not just try and guess what we want to hear.

Overall I have no doubt the DUK is intrinsically a good, well meaning organisation, in the very early days of diagnosis their support line helped me and in the past I have obtained information from their web site, which I feel is now lacking in the documents it used to contain, their efforts and means of communication to me as a member is purely through Balance, so this needs to be good and balanced.

I would be interested to know where 'Balances' editorial direction comes from, as it is becoming the source of much anguish within the diabetic community, I feel it is not to the same agenda as that of DUK.

The statement from ?the Balance team at DUK? yesterday was a farce, and really was an insult to the many fine people who work on the publication, however, they took collective responsibility for the action of one or two people and that while noble, it is wrong, why should innocent staff take the flack for what is clearly an editorial decision.

Of course, that said the balance team might be purely the editor (?!) and a designer, plus someone collating the articles from freelance journalists.

What I did notice on the blog of the editor via the DUK website is that he?s just returned from holidays to the sunny Costa del Merseyside? hmmm cosy, did he pop into see the said nurse? Also, they site wouldn't let me comment on his blog entry!

Clearly we are biased, but our dear friend and moderator Mr Northerner has published some quite superb poems about diabetes and some of the trials and tribulations, he?s offered these to Balance and they have declined his offer.

Perhaps someone should educate these people to the fact that humour and laughter is a good relief from all the stress and anxiety that diabetes throws at us? Again, a further illustration that they don't really know what its like to live with diabetes.

The refused his poems? Why on earth would they do that, do they not realise how some of Northeners poems have taken us from a day of depression and made us feel slightly human again? I would have thought like most mags that publish short stories and poems they would have grabbed these up in a snap as it is true to diabetics not just a load of tosh but then reading the mag lately I have come to realise most of it is just adverts for products that do not help the young or middleaged person and the rest of the magazine is generally aimed at the elderly (no offence to anyone intended) but really I would have thought they'd jump at the chance of helping cheer us diabetics up and make light of a disease that can be crippling

The DUK weekends do have a good name except I have heard some not brilliant reports. The children tend to be run higher than normal so the control is not brilliant. I have had a few friends whose children pump who have not been allowed on the holidays because they don't support pumpers, they don't know how. One of the weekends I was told about, one of the helpers was actually a pumper but still wouldn't allow a child pumper to go. I would never send my child on a DUK holiday as I think the control would be horrendous from what friends have told me. However the children that do go generally have a great time so you have to weigh it up. One child was bullied by the boy who shared the room with him for the whole duration and it ruined his weekend and will never go again.

Hi All,

Well I have cancelled Nathan's DUK membership...over this topic....I find it totally outrageous..and has angered me no end....I am however going to donate Nathan's membership fee to JDRF

I voiced my opinions on a differnet thread last night. I agree with you Julie - i went on an adult support weekedn a few weeks ago and it was the most brilliant thing I've ever done where my diabetes is concerned. That wouldn't have been possible without DUK. Yes, someone, somewhere along the line has made a silly decision to include a letter that maybe they shouldn't have but DUK as a whole isn't responsible. And yes, they HAVE done some great stuff - the support weekends being a great example.
