Did a bit of an experiment last night. We had fish & chips (oven cooked) with mushy peas. My BG before dinner was 5.3, wife was 4.7. 1 hour after, I was 9.8, but surprisingly, wife was 9.0! 2 hours after, I was 8.4, wife 5.3. So, wife returns to normal after 2 hours but shocked how high she went after an hour. She is not diabetic & this has been shown on blood tests. I think this shows how high non D's can go.

Interesting that she did go up as high as that.....would be interesting to see how long it stayed there for....

Yep. After 2 hours, back to normal. Unlike me. I did wake at 6.1, so no long term effects.🙂

There was a TV series a few years ago ( possibly 10, it was round the time of my diagnosis) with Dr Alice Roberts explaining how the human body worked. I remember her stuffing herself with a large Belgian bun and testing her blood sugar, and it did shoot up into the high 8s before coming down reasonably quickly.
I found it interesting to see what happens in a non-D.

I think that's the difference Mark. I did the same thing with my husband after a meal and you're right, non diabetics can surge to high levels an hour or so after a meal but quickly recover. However, he is watching his glucose intake based on my experience and because it's healthier to do.

I'm wondering how much diabetics (particularly type2's) can drop in an hour. I've been known to drop 3 points.

I dropped from 14.7 to 3.3 in just over 2 hours the other day, a drop of 11.4

Gracious pav! That's a huge drop and I can't imagine you'd feel so good with such a rapid plummet.

I'm fortunate in that I usually stay within a range of 3.5 most of the time. Doesn't matter whether I eat or starve for days, my BG's have never dropped below 5.2 that I'm aware of. I've never yet registered a 4 on my meter.

I've done the experiment with my husband to and he goes high in the first hour then drops to normal levels at the 2 hour mark. I don't usually but did one day and felt c**p a false hypo I was told and I've had a few since too. I've had one hypo and was told that can't happen ever with T2 on no meds. That was when hubby was very firm with the PN and told her she was talking c**p and shouldn't be in her job. we knew how to solve it having a T1 son, but I wanted answers and got none to start with.
I discovered it was caused by not eating and exercising strenuously for an hour. I have never made that mistake again.

The quickest I dropped was after a Mars bar test I did a year ago. 5.3 before, 9.6 at 1hr, 6.4 at 2 hrs & 4.3 at 3 hrs. Technically meaning a Mars bar is better for me than fish & chips.:D

I would imagine it started dropping pretty soon after the hour test.

When my mum dislocated her hip replacement last September, the paramedic tested her glucose while we were waiting for the ambulance - 11.1! We'd only just had lunch - half a white bagel each, loads of salad and some fruit - so he put it down to that and the huge amount of pain she was in. 😱

Anyway, just to make sure she hadn't caught my diabetes 🙄 she checked her fasting BG for the next few days and she was fine. Phew! Can't have her competing for all the diabetes sympathy now, can we?😉

It's interesting to see what muggles' bodies get up to. 🙂

I've been wanting to experiment on my mum and OH! is that bad of me lol x

No, not wrong. They must suffer too.😛

I'd use my old meter for them, purely cause I don't want my accu-chek meter results being messed up and me trying to remember which ones belong to me lol but I've been wanting them as guinea pigs for a while :D x

My mum and OH have tested on my old meter, but it was before eating, I'm tempted to do a 1 hour post test next time mums round for dinner.

What makes us have these urges though eh haha :D x
